Surveying EngineeringTechnology WHY STUDY SURVEYING ENGINEERINGTECHNOLOGY AT UMAINE?

Surveying engineering technology is apractice-focused program that providesstudents with the foundation to embark on a rewarding career as a professionalland surveyor. Obtaining a surveyingengineering technology degree at theUniversity of Maine provides numerousbenefits, including a first-class surveyingeducation where 98 percent of the graduatespass their fundamentals of land surveyingexam before graduating. e average UMaineclass size in surveying engineering technologyis 15 students.

UMaine’s surveying engineering technology(SVT) program boasts outstanding facultylicensed in multiple states. Two are alsolicensed as professional engineers and one isan attorney at law. Two faculty members havebeen awarded the top surveying teachingaward in the nation. Two have received theprestigious Surveyor of the Year Award fromstate surveying societies, and one was votedby his peers to be one of the top 25 mostinfluential surveyors in the nation.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH A SURVEYINGENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY DEGREE?

Surveying was practiced by presidents GeorgeWashington, omas Jefferson and AbrahamLincoln. Graduates are employed across theUnited States — from remote rural areas tolarge cities; from government agencies, suchas the Bureau of Land Management, toprivate practice; from one-person firms tolarge multidiscipline companies. Startingsalaries range from $28,000 to $70,000 ayear, depending on the location.

Alumni are usually employed as techniciansand quickly progress to project managementroles (party chiefs). Within two to four years

many graduates obtain their professional landsurveying license and supervise surveyingservices or departments. Many own andoperate their own firms after 10 years ofpractice.

OPPORTUNITIES TO EXCEL

Students can obtain experience during thesummer working for private land surveyorsand government agencies, such as theBureau of Land Management. Summerexperience has been available in all NewEngland states, Alaska, California,Wyoming, Montana, California, Florida andNevada. Experience encompasses deedresearch, computer-aided design, projectmanagement, project planning, boundarysurveying, photogrammetry, globalpositioning systems (GPS) and geographicinformation systems (GIS).

SCHOLARSHIPS

irteen scholarships are available in theprogram. In addition, there are numerousnational and state scholarships. Studentsenjoy a 90 percent success rate in obtainingstate society scholarships.

NEBHE PROGRAM

Applicants to this program who reside inConnecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire,Rhode Island or Vermont are eligible forreduced tuition (in-state plus 50 percent)under the New England Regional StudentProgram, administered through the NewEngland Board of Higher Education(nebhe.org).

Surveyors work in a variety of unique outdoor locations. This surveyor is using a data collector and survey grade global positioning systemreceiver to communicate with satellites for extremely accurate land measurements.
