DESCRIPTION

Presentation by Matthijs Leendertse of TNO at PICNIC 2009 in Amsterdam on closing the gap between the opportunities of ICT and media technology for education, and practice in formal education. Formal Education 1900 - 2009

Not much has changed.

The introduction and rise of ICT has not lead to a radical change with regards to the innovation and organization of learning processes, but manifests itself as a gradual development (Kennisnet, 2009).

In formal education that is...

Why is there a gap between theory and practice in formal

education?

It’s what we value

And how we measure it

Standardized End Goals

Standardized tests

Standardized Benchmarks

Even internationally…

“The newest PISA study can hardly be compared with its predecessors. In the 2001 results, testing focused on reading comprehension, but in 2003 it was heavy on math and now the emphasis is on the natural sciences” (Deutsche Welle,2007).

Change what we value

Learners, teachers, schools and policymakers respond to benchmarks they are held accountable to.

If we do not change the benchmarks, how can we expect the system to change?

Include Innovation & Creativity

NY School: Quest to Learn

A school that uses the underlying design principles of games to create highly immersive, game-like learning experiences.

Games and other forms of digital media serve to model the complexity and promise of “systems.” Understanding and accounting for this complexity is a fundamental literacy of the 21st century.

Include Informal & Facultative Learning

Include Teachers & Learners in developing open content

We need to relearn what to value:

LEARNING

not institutions
