From the Desk of Fr. Ricardo As a fairly new citizen of the United States, the Fourth of July is a true birthday celebration for me. I love what my country stands for. It stands for the freedom of each person to make choices. True human liberty. Freedom is also the topic of today’s gospel. Jesus Christ willingly and freely chose to die to set all people free. He came to incorporate Jews, Gentiles, Samari-tans, everyone into one family in Christ, the unconquered Son of God. When God created Adam and Eve, freedom was the first and greatest gift God gave. He made us for a free life. We have free will, and it is God’s plan that we use our freedom to continue the work of salvation. St. Au-gustine said, “God created us without us. But he willed not to save us without us.” The sin of Adam and Eve was to choose to go in a dif-ferent direction from God’s plan. Our first parents led us on the way to many bad choices. We all make bad choices. Sometimes our country makes them too. That doesn’t mean that freedom is not a divine gift. Adam and Eve refused to allow God to occupy first place in their lives. That is the danger of freedom. God must occupy first place in our actions and in our plan-ning, or we find that we lose true freedom. Today’s gospel begins with Jesus Christ, the absolutely obedient Son of God, turning His face toward Jerusalem, committing decisively to the salvation of every single per-son, who made a foolish choice. Divine grace sets us free. Whatever keeps us from following God, be it anger, be it intolerance, laziness, or any other obstacle that keeps us from doing God’s will, that obstacle to love and free-dom can only be removed by the power of the One who has risen from the dead. This week, as we claim to be a nation of persons “under God” let us remember that the American ideal of “liberty and justice under God” comes from the teaching of Jesus Christ. We are called to be the laborers who get that message out. This message is for the whole world. Freedom is a privilege. It is also a responsibility. As we preach outwardly to the world, we must maintain our inward commitment to our role in God’s original plan. Doing God’s will is what we and our nation were created to do.
HARD SAYINGS Today’s Gospel contains a troubling teaching of Jesus. It is among a list of so-called “Hard Sayings.” Whoever loves father or mother more than me ... whoever loves son or daughter more than me ... whoever does not take up his cross, is not worthy of me. This is one of those passages that stick in our minds. It is a passage that non-Christians point to with sarcasm. It is a passage that requires thought, lots of thought. Because it sounds harsh, we might try to paraphrase: Jesus is saying that we are unworthy of Him if we prefer anything or anyone to Him, even our own parents or children. Jesus is making clear that there is a great cost to discipleship. The Gospels were written not to be comfortable or comforting, nice and familiar. The Good News challenges us with the truth that we must make hard choices and pick up crosses designed specifically for us. In the “Mission Discourse”, or Jesus’ instructions to the Twelve who are to carry on His mission, Jesus emphasizes that we must be single-minded in following Him because in this way we come to understand the sheer immensity of the gift He gives to those who follow Him. What He offers is closer and deeper than the very closest human relationship. In following Christ, our union with God becomes a sacrifice in the truest sense. We offer what we have, what we are in union with Christ’s own great sacrifice.

Summer Mass Schedule The 12:05 weekday Mass has concluded for the months of June, July, August and September. and will resume on Monday, October 5th. The Sunday 11:45 a.m. Mass will continue this year only because of the need for social distanc-ing at all weekend Masses.
Happy Fourth of July
We pray for our country on this Fourth of July weekend as we commemorate our independence as a nation. We pray that God will continue to pour out his blessings upon our country and strengthen our gratitude for our God-given liberty and pray that we will always be worthy stewards of the many bless-ings the United States of America has received from Almighty God. In a special way, we remember all of those who have given their lives in the service of the United States in order to protect our freedom.
FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
We are pleased to announce that our second grade students will celebrate the Sacrament of First Reconcilia-tion on Saturday, July 11th. Participating students will celebrate the Sacrament of First Holy Communion in two groups on Sunday, July 12th at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The safety of our children is an absolute priority. We are making numerous adjustments in compliance with all Diocesan and government guidelines. The First Com-munion Masses, therefore, are private; only the children and their immediate families will be present in the church. We had hoped to share this day with the com-munity, as we have in the past. Unfortunately, it is not possible. Neither is it acceptable, however, to continue to deny the children the Body of Jesus Christ. So, we hope you will join us online. We ask the entire parish community to watch the live stream on our Facebook page as the children join us in communion with Jesus Christ. As always, keep our second grade families in your prayers as we welcome the children to the Eucha-ristic table.

Ordination of Bishop-Elect Rev. Kevin J. Sweeney
On April 15, 2020, our Holy Father, Pope Francis made a provision for the pastoral care of the Diocese of Pater-son, through his appointment of Rev. Kevin J. Sweeney, Priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn as Bishop of Pater-son. Following consultation with the Apostolic Nun-cio of the United States of America, The Most Reverend Christophe Pierre, I joyfully announce the Ordination and Installation of the Eighth Bishop of Paterson, and I also announce a Mass of Welcome to be celebrated with Bish-op Sweeney at a later date. The details for the celebra-tion of Ordination and Installation are as follows: At seven o’clock in the evening, on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, Solemn Vespers will be celebrated in prepara-tion for the ordination of the Bishop-Elect the following day. At two o’clock in the afternoon, on Wednesday, Ju-ly 1, 2020, the Memorial of Saint Junipero Serra, Priest, His Eminence Joseph W. Cardinal Tobin, C.Ss.R., Metropolitan Archbishop of Newark will or-dain the Most Reverend Kevin J. Sweeney, to the Or-der of Bishops and Install Bishop Sweeney as the Eighth Bishop of Paterson with The Most Reverend Nicholas A. DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, and myself (Most Rev. Ar-thur Serratelli) serving as Co-Consecrating Bishops. Both celebrations will take place in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Paterson and will be in accord with social distancing norms and will strictly require limited admission by ticket only. Both events will be live streamed on the website of the Diocese of Paterson with further instructions regarding access to the live stream to follow. When social distancing norms can be relaxed and a greater number of the faithful are able to gather, a Mass of Thanksgiving and Welcome will be celebrated by Bish-op Sweeney in the late autumn, so that the local church of Paterson can pray together with the shepherd who will guide us in the name of the Lord.
