CDRSS Summary
The Communicable Disease Reporting and Surveillance System (CDRSS) is a state wide system of
reporting communicable disease and work related conditions to the local health department where
the patient resides for further investigation. The purpose of this system is to protect the public
health from certain diseases and conditions. These reportable conditions and the time frame for
reporting are outlined in NJAC Title 8, Chapters 57-58.
1. Lab/hospital enters pt demographic information and positive results into CDRSS website
2. PHN logs into website daily to view residents with reportable conditions
3. PHN contacts Hospital/MD/pt via mail and/or phone as necessary to investigate illness
4. PHN notifies school, workplace and/or county epidemiologist as necessary
5. PHN educates patient/doctor/school/workplace on the appropriate CDC guidelines and
state recommendations regarding treating and controlling condition
6. PHN completes and files the necessary reports via CDRSS website and any additional
reports as directed by the county epidemiologist, NJ State DoH and/or CDC
