Chapters 9-11

Fabric is stuff we use to make clothes out of. Here are pieces of fabric,

and here is somebody sewing some fabric, to make some clothes.

Here is a spool of thread.

Weaving means making some fabric with some thread, or

something like that, going over and under and crossing. The

cloth looks like this:

This woman is weaving with a simple machine called a loom.

We say spiders weave webs. This spider is weaving a beautiful web.

A person has noted something if he saw it, or heard it, or otherwise perceived it—

but very carefully, with interest.

The boys noted that the big goldfish were orange, and the swan was

black—not white!

Note where the chickadee is.Can the boy see it there?

Sedentary means sitting.

A person or animal is sedentary who sits around all the time, and does not stand

up much.

This man watches too much TV. He is sedentary.

Food is delectable if it tastes very, very good.

Which is more delectable—fresh vegetables or old pastries?

fresh vegetables old pastries

A person is gullible if he will believe anything he is told, no

matter how silly. A gullible person is easy to fool, easy to

trick.

You are gullible if you believe the Moon is made of cheese.

(It is a big rock, silly!)

A person’s exertions are things that a person tries to

do, which are very hard to do. They take a lot of effort.

In a famous Greek myth, the gods made a man named Sisyphus roll a

stone up a hill, this way:

His exertions never stopped!

To stand astride something is to stand above it and across it.

The statute of Colossus stood astride the entrance to the harbor

on the island of Rhodes.

An explosion is a giant bang.

All at once, air expands very quickly, which breaks things in its way, and there is often a lot

of fire and a big noise.

The car was wrecked inan explosion.

Bewilderment means being very, very confused. You are

bewildered if you don’t understand at all.

Bill is bewildered. His experiment did not work the

way he thought it would.

A veil is a very thin piece of cloth that a lady wears (or

used to wear) over her face.

Many ladies still wear veils over their faces when they get married.
