Design Principles Examples

Gestalt Theory: p.172The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Gestalt principles…the elements of design should be in-tegrated so the design, not the elements is the first thing we see.

What was the flock of geese example in the book?

Principle of Closure.Even though the circle is not joined together,

we still perceive a circle due to the principle of closure.

The kind of closure we are talking about occurs when a series of visual elements suggest a connection between one another, when, in fact, they never actually touch.

Similarity Principle

In the example, the larger circles appear to belong togetherbecause of the similarity in size

The example at left containing 11 distinct objects appears as as single

unit because all of the shapes have similarity. Unity occurs be-cause the triangular shapes at the bottom of the eagle symbol look sim-ilar to the shapes that form the sunburst

The fifteen figures above form a unified whole (the shape of a tree) because of their proximity.
