PlainsPlateaus

Mountains

3 types of landforms

Large, flat areas, often found in interior regions of continents

I. Plains

● Ideal for... ○ farming○ grazing animals

● make up ½ of the land area in the US

Plains that are found near the ocean● Atlantic Coastal Plain

○ East coast stretching from NJ to FL

● Gulf Coastal Plain○ southern US - Gulf of Mexico

A. Coastal Plains (lowlands)

● Central portion of the US● flat grassy area with few trees

● Great Plains (high plains)between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains

B. Interior Plains

flat, raised areas of land made up of nearly horizontal rocks that have been uplifted by forces with the Earth.

II. Plateaus

Colorado Plateau within the Grand Canyon has the Colorado River running through it.

Four main types of mountainsa. folded

b. upwarpedc. fault-blockd. volcanic

III. Mountains

the rock layers are folded like a rug that has been pushed up against the wall

A. Folded Mountains

Appalachian Mountains and the Rocky Mountains

Bear Mountain bridge

form when blocks of Earth’s crust are pushed up by forces inside Earth.sharp peaks and sharp ridges

B. Upwarped Mountains

Adirondack Mountains in NY

Rocky Mountains in Colorado and New Mexico

Black Hills in South Dakota

Black Hills National Forest

made up of huge, tilted blocks of rock that are separated from surrounding rock by faults.vertical movement - one rock pushes up while the other pushes down

C. Fault-Block Mountains

Grand Tetons of Wyoming

form when molten rock forms code-shaped structures on Earth’s surface

D. Volcanic Mountains

Mount St. Helens before and after the 1980 eruption
