Atoms are building blocks of

Each element is made of only

one type of atom.

Example: Aluminum is made

The number of protons in the atom. (If the atom is neutral, it is also the number

of electrons.)

• 6 (same as atomic number)

Valence electrons are electrons in the outermost shell of an atom. They are involved in forming bonds with other elements.

How do you figure out valence electrons?
