How did the South treat free African Americans?

Made laws that made life even harder for them Not allowed to vote Not allowed to travel In some cases had to move out of the

state or be enslaved

What were slave codes? Laws meant to keep slaves from

either running away or rebelling Travel passes No education Could not testify in court

They remembered about the ancient Hebrews-this inspired them

Sang religious songs in fields called spirituals
