    BorninPhiladelphiain1855,CeciliaBeauxwasanimportantfemaleartistofthelatenineteenthandearlytwentiethcenturies.Knownprimarilyforherportraitpaintings,Beauxachievedconsiderablefameduringherlifetime.HerworkshanginsomeoftheworldsmostprestigiousmuseumssuchastheMuseedOrsayandtheUffiziGallery.

    TheyoungestdaughterofJeanAdolpheBeaux,Cecilialosthermother,CeciliaKentLeavitt,asaninfanthermotherdiedfrompuerperalfeverwhenCeciliawastwelvedaysold.HerfatherreturnedtoFranceandCeciliaandhersisterwereraisedbytheirmaternalgrandmotherandaunts.MostoftheirtimewasspentinPhiladelphia.Beauxbeganartlessonswitharelativewhenshewassixteen.Twoyearslatersheobtainedapostasadrawingteacher.In1863,shehadaworkpublishedinSt.NicholasMagazineafterabrushwithlithographylessons.

    In1876,BeauxbeganstudyingatthePennsylvaniaAcademyofFineArts.Withinthenextdecade,Beauxbegantoreceiveseriouscommissionsforherwork.Herpainting,LesDerniersJoursdEnfance,wasawardedaprizeforthebestworkpaintedbyafemaleartistandthepaintingwassubsequentlyshownattheParisSalon.AlthoughBeauxbecameacelebratedartistinPhiladelphia,shedecidedtoembarkonfurtherstudiesinParis.Whileherfamilywasnotinitiallyhappyaboutherdecisiontorenouncemarriageforanartisticcareer,theyeventuallysupportedherdecisionwholeheartedly.

    AtthetimeBeauxarrivedinParis,theImpressionistpainterswerebeginningtogotheirseparateways.AlthoughthemovementwouldsignificantlyinfluenceBeauxsnearcontemporaryMaryCassatt,Beauxherselfcouldnotsubscribetoitstenets.She,ontheotherhand,preferredtopaintinarealisticstylemoreakintoartistslikeJohnSingerSargentanartistshewouldoftenfavorablybecomparedto.BeauxwouldcontinueintherealistveinfortherestofhercareerevenasartistslikeMatisseandPicassowouldchannelartinbrandnewdirections.

    Uponherhomecomingin1889,BeauxworkeddiligentlyasanartistandevenworkedpartoftheyearinNewYork.ShereceivedmanycommissionsfromclientsalongtheeastcoastandwouldeventuallypaintaportraitofFirstLadyEdithRooseveltandsketchPresidentRooseveltattheWhiteHouse.AlthoughBeauxdidnotachievethegreatfamethatCassattdid,shedidenjoyimmenseacclaimduringherlifeandherworkcontinuestogarnergreatrespectamongartcriticsandarthistorians.Beauxdiedin1942atthe
