From Deacon Bill Warmouth My brothers and sisters,
When I see the words “Blessed are” I immediately would think of the Sermon on the Mount. However, that’s not the case. Although many scripture scholars consider the descriptions found in today’s gospel of Luke and also in Matthew’s gospel, as referring to the same event yet there is a difference.
What is entitled the “Sermon on the Mount” in Matthew’s gospel has become the “Sermon on the Plain” in Luke’s gospel. Matthew wanted the listener or reader to see Jesus as another Moses, giving the new law to the people yet directing it mainly to his disciples; he gathers only his disciples on the mount, separating them from the multitude following him. Luke, in today’s gospel, pictures Jesus coming down to a stretch of level ground to join his disciples and the crowd. Luke’s Jesus reaches out immediately to those who have followed him and addresses them in a personal way, “Blessed are you poor…” unlike Matthew who has Jesus speak in a more ambiguous way, “Blessed are the poor in spirit…”.
Since Luke’s gospel seems to address social justice issues more directly than the others (i.e., from the beginning in the Magnificat, “The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty.”, Jesus’ reading in Nazareth, “because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,”.
What Luke and Matthew have done, we tend to do also – adapt the words of Jesus to our special needs. Sometimes we should hear the gospel as addressed immediately to ourselves, as Luke did in addressing to “you poor”. At other times God calls us to proclaim the good news of the gospel to others and present Jesus’ words in a more general call to all as Matthew does “Blessed are the poor in spirit”
Just as Luke and Matthew adapted Jesus’ words to fit the message they were sending; so too must it must be adapted to the changing circumstances of our lives. It’s not that God’s truth changes but our life does. We are like the tree in the reading from Jeremiah. The tree remains in one place; the seasons and conditions change around it. So too, throughout our lives we move between the beatitudes and the woes. At any given time, people in our community are in different situations, some with trial and suffering and others with achievement and peace.
However, there is one constant that we can take with us from today’s readings. In First Corinthians Paul tells us Jesus has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Our psalm reminds us “Blessed are they who hope in the Lord!!!
Peace, Deacon Bill

With your generosity so far we have remodeled the St. Joseph Room, Parish Center Bathroom, Music Room, paved the alley and put lights in the parking lot.
Please remember to send in your payments directly to the “To Teach Who Christ Is” campaign using the envelope enclosed with your statement. Save us an envelope and stamp, as it must go through them for the proper credit to be applied. We are hoping to repave the parking lot when we have acquired enough money. We are a little over half way there.

2019 “Souper Bowl” Results The total number of cans and packages of soups and
other food items collected for this 10th annual “Souper Bowl” campaign was 785! Once again, we divided the collection between the Catholic Charities Food Pantry and the Des Plaines Self-Help Closet and Food
Pantry. Our local food pantries are very grateful to our parish for the generous support of their mission to feed the hungry among us. We encourage you to continue your support of our ongoing parish ministries including the Backpack Ministry, PADS and St. Stephen’s Table.
