Quarters located at KAZIPET Railway station
G + 2 Building with 4 Flats at each level
Constructed Building more than 30 years ago
All flats are occupied
Date of inspection: 30-03-2013
Salient Features:
ELEVATION REENTRANT CRACKS
VERTICAL & DIAGONAL CRACKS
CORROSION OF RIENFORCEMENT
LINTEL FAILURE
CRACK IN THE FLOORCRACK IN THE WALL
WATER LEAKAGE FROM DRAINAGE PIPES
PLANTGROWTH
NEW WATER TANK
DEMOLISHED OLD WATER TANK (expected)
DAMPNESS
SPALLING FROM SLAB
VISUAL OBSERVATIONS:
Structural cracks are observed in walls
Spalling & Peeling of cover
Corrosion of Reinforcement
Settlement of the floor
Plant & Algae growth
Severe Dampness in the walls
Discolouration of the building
REASONS: Major cracks in compound wall due to differential
settlement of the foundation
Reentrant cracks due to Stress concentration
Spalling & Peeling of cover
Corrosion of bars due to seepage of water
Settlement of the floor due to poor soil conditions
Plant & Algae growth due to leakage of water from pipes
Dampness in the walls due penetration of water from tank
Poor Maintenance & No repair at initial stages of damage
Tests to be Recommended:
Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity test
Half-cell Potential test
Rebound Hammer Test
Carbonation test
Resistivity test
Suggested Repair
Techniques:
o Cracks: Stiching Method
o Spalling & Peeling: Bond coats & Grouts
o Corrosion: Proper cover & coating
o Dampness: Thin Polymer & Epoxy overlays
o Settlement of floor: Proper Soil Compaction
o Plant & Algae Growth: New Drainage pipes
Conclusion:
As Many parts of the building are damaged immediately
repair has to be done.
The Repair Techniques improve the remaining life of
the structure up to a considerable extent.
Hence This Moderately damaged building has to be
tested in detail and appropriate methods are to be
applied.
Periodic inspection & Maintenance
