• Is the word Carnival from the Italian word "carne" (meat), or the Latin word
"carrus" (cart)?
• Carnival is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent, usually between February and the beginning of March.
• During Italian carnival people dress up with costumes that overturn their personality and their daily lives, symbolizing possible desires.
• The feast typically involves a public celebration or parade combining different elements from the circus, with masquerades to public street parties
Carnival is one of Italy's biggest festivals and events often last for two to three weeks before the actual day of Carnival.
• Carnival is celebrated all over Italy in a variety of ways, although Venice and Viareggio have the most well known celebrations.
Sicily has a few
celebrations around the
island but the one of the Carnival of Sciacca is
most popular.
• The origins of the Carnival of Sciacca possibly go back to Roman times, when the Saturnalia was celebrated.
• Carnival of Sciacca includes special guests, testimonials and 4 fascinating days of parades, allegorical floats, masquerades and folk groups
