At Canley Heights we want all our students to connect, thrive and succeed. Positive Be-
haviour for Learning helps us create and environment where the focus is learning, and
building positive relationships.
It is important that all members of our school community support us in our effort to pro-
vide the education our children deserve.
In the Classroom Every learning space has our
rules and expectations clearly
displayed
PBL stickers are handed out to
those children who are following
the rules and meeting the PBL
expectations of behaviour.
They follow the system set out
below.
Page 2 Canley Heighlites
When our students have trouble remembering and following the
rules and meeting expectations they are asked to think about
their behaviour and what they need to do There are conse-
quences for continued misbehaviour.
Rule Remind-
er
Student is reminded of school expectations and rules

Class Reflec-
tion
Student moved to a different classroom area to complete work alone, until they are ready to return to normal groupings. This time is used to allow students time to regain composure and reflect on the school expectations
Teacher conferences with student following the time out period, using CHPS Reflection Questions.
Teacher records details of ongoing, class managed problem behaviours on STARS
Buddy Class
Reflection
If the student’s behaviour is expected to cause excessive disruption to the buddy class, skip to
executive support instead.
Student moved to a buddy class to complete work
Student is counselled by class teacher on return
Teacher enters a behaviour referral on STARS. Casual staff – leave detailed notes of incident for classroom teacher to enter upon return.
When student receives their second buddy class time out in a term, the classroom teacher informs their supervisor to discuss strategies and meet with parents as needed.
Executive
Support
If problem behaviour is continued in the buddy class, or the student is unable to successful-ly return to class following buddy time out without disruption, executive assistance is sought.
Executive staff member determines further action.
Teacher enters a behaviour referral on STARS (if not already done from the buddy class time out).

AT CHPS WE VALUE OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR MANNERS It may appear that manners have taken a downward slide in priority over recent years. The fact remains however, that instilling the principles of good manners in young children is exceedingly important. Understanding and using good manners has so many positives: it shows courtesy and empathy towards others; indicates thoughtfulness, and reflects on the child’s upbringing and education. Fundamentally, good manners are necessary for people to get along to-gether in this world. Here are ways you can encourage a child to be gra-cious and well mannered Introduce polite words from a young age
Children as young as two can learn to say “please” and “thank you”. Despite not fully understanding
the implications of using these words, children can learn from a very early age that “please” must be
attached to asking for things, and “thank you” always comes at the end of an interaction.
Respect and sensitivity
In summary, good manners stem from respect for another individual, and the route to respect is es-
sentially sensitivity. If you can teach a child the value of sensitivity, you are giving them a wonderful
gift.
Master five important phrases
Along with “please” and “thank you”, ensure that children understand that “excuse me”, “May I…” and
“no, thank you” are also required in everyday life and must be mastered.
Correct on the spot
The best way to learn is by making mistakes, and so by correcting children ‘in action’ they can get a
deeper appreciation of manners and how to apply them.
Correct a child politely
Be careful how you go about correcting children because correcting a child aggressively or in front of others can be a form of rudeness in itself. The idea is certainly not to ‘make an example ‘of the child. Consider the situation you are in, and if appropriate, move the child away to a more private area to explain your corrections.
RFF-Stage 2 Road Safety This term stage 2 have been looking at different aspects of Safe living. One of the key learning areas
explored was Road safety and recognising different signs around our community. Children were re-
quired to identify safe ways to cross the road and were required to know the traffic light colours and
what they represent. The children enjoyed making traffic light biscuits and fruit kababs

Attendance We would like to remind our entire school community that all children need to be at school on time every day. It is important that everyone understands the commitment that you need to have towards the education that is being offered at CHPS and the fact that no child can afford to arrive late or in fact be away from school unnecessarily. Attending school is not an option. It is compulsory. As the weather gets colder it is difficult for all of us to get up, get dressed and make our way to school each day. However, we as teachers have a responsibility as part of our job to turn up on time each day. Students also have a job which is to learn and they need to be responsible in getting to school on time and attend each day. Parents you also have a job which is to support your child in getting to school on time as well as attending school each day. You also have another job to support your child’s education by supporting and valuing the teaching at learning at the school and therefore the teachers @ CHPS. We have an amazing school and for the staff to do their job the student’s must be here!
Last Wednesday the 5th June, our debating team went face to face with Harrington Street Public School in the first
round of the Fairfield District Debating Competition.
Our team tackled the issue of “Students should be held legally responsible for bullying in schools,” with con-
viction. It was our role as the negative team to oppose this claim.
Our students in the order of debating were Qadan Abdi, Alannah Whitfield and Jayden Mai, with Cassie Chen taking
notes and forwarding them onto the speakers. Despite our hard efforts we were defeated by the other school, whose
rebuttals were stronger and more convincing. All our speakers presented outstanding speeches with Qadan and
Jayden awarded speaker points and we as a school were commended on our manners and effort by the Canley
Vale Public School’s Adjudicator, Cynthia Villar.
We are proud of our students, who experienced a challenging debate and have taken away with them future goals to
work on. Our second-round debate will be in Week 10 against Mt Pritchard Public School and the debate issue is:
Plastic Bags should be banned.

Instructional Leader Update Every 5 weeks the Instructional Leaders meet with
teachers to discuss how the students in their class are
progressing in English and mathematics. We look at
student data and determine what we can do better, to
ensure all students are learning and achieving their
goals.
As part of these Data Talks, each teacher brings a sample of writing from every student that we analyse together to determine what our students are doing well, and what they need to learn next. We develop new learning goals and discuss what strategies the teacher will use to ensure these students make progress in the next five weeks. It is clear that our students are working hard and put-ting a lot of effort into their writing. Our wonderful teachers are also working incredibly hard to ensure all students are supported to become skilful authors.
Preschool News Preschool have been so busy the last couple of weeks. We have been working real-ly hard to improve our learning environment. We started by talking about, Why we are at the preschool? Who are we? Who are our friends? How do we know we are friends? These discussions lead to the decision that, at preschool we are a family. The children are learned that another word for family can be belonging. Together we designed a beautiful ‘Belonging Tree’. Every child and staff member is represented on this tree. We know and recognise that, every person at preschool is unique and special.
This week the children have experimented with using our light table. Children explored textures and lines of leaves. To do this, we used pencils and shading over the leaves. Our beautiful drawings are now being displayed on our new wall display. On this display is also some name writing samples.
The children have been focussing on writing their first names independently. We have investigated different forms of name writing through, chalk, crayons, pencils and play dough
Art and creativity is important for children to express themselves and to make connec-tions with the real world. Pre-schoolers were curious learners as they, used colours and natural materials to splatter paint. The children discussed colours and shades. Recognising and naming colours is an im-portant part of children’s development. Look at our artwork display.
1/2S News
This term has been a very busy term for 1/2S. We did a lot of fun things in class. We also did Life Education where we learnt how to keep ourselves safe and healthy with Healthy Harold. We enjoyed having older students from year 5 and 6 coming to read with us. But the thing we enjoyed the most was our excursion to Featherdale Wildlife Park. We got to see and touch many different Australian animals. Our favourite one was Leo the Koala who just turned 4 years old. He was very furry, warm, soft and cuddly.

Garden Club
Garden club have worked hard this term at keeping our school grounds beautiful, as well as
planting our sensory gardens for infants to enjoy using. Our sensory gardens are lovely and
our students have been very excited to begin using them. Our garden club also began planting
seeds in preparation for our new edible garden to come. Very exciting times ahead for our
happy gardeners.
