The Non‐GMO Supply Working Group Newsletter was created to keep members connected andupdated on the progress of the Working Group We are making great strides and it is importantto share these developments to encourage collaboration and identify opportunities which arebeneficial to everyones work The newsletter is a quarterly publication and includes information oncurrent developments and collaborations a summary of the discussion occurring in the groupsGoogle forum notifications of future events and instances of Non‐GMO news coverage As wecontinue to publish the newsletter we are eager to hear your input and how to create the bestcontent as a resource for our participants

At the spring meeting in Chicago Kellee James from Mercaris proposed to create atool to better understand and analyze existing infrastructure for segregated nonshyGMOgrain handling for animal feed and food Mercaris in conjunction with the Working

Group is creating an ldquoAsset Maprdquo to show the geographic distribution of nonshyGMOgrain suppliers This will help to facilitate the transition of conventional acreage to nonshyGMO production while also showing the importance of expanding organic agriculturalproduction
The idea remains to have an interactive webshyaccessible tool that will allow acomprehensive view of grain handling (cleaning conditioning processing) facilities byregion The map will enable users to understand current infrastructure in relation totheir own facilities and logistics It will include a categorical display of facilities by stateand give key information such as crops handled total handling volume and percentoperating utilization
Thanks goes out to ApplegateGina amp Chris EquilibriumAtish amp Rob HilandDanMasters and MinsaRodrigo in providing the funds to launch this project We arebeginning with facilities in the Northeast and will have a working prototype available forthe group to test out at the October meeting If you would like to be a part of the effort please contact Todd Jones attoddjonesmercariscom

The recent USDA announcement of new GMOshyfree product labeling has been a largeitem of discussion among the working group A letter by Agriculture Secretary TomVilsack on May 1st to his staff detailed a USDA lsquoProcess Verifiedrsquo label that would bevoluntary for consumer packaged goods This label was requested by a ldquoleading globalcompanyrdquo later disclosed to be the company SunOpta who received the firstverification label for nonshyGMO corn and soybeans
The Associated Press received a copy of this letter and writer Mary Clare Jalonick
wrote an article on its contents on May 14th The article has been circulated amongnews sources with a generally optimistic air implying a progressive outlook ongovernmental regulation of genetically engineered products and a large gain for thenonshyGMO movement Read More

Another exciting development discussed by the working group is the recentannouncement made by Chipotle about their sourcing of all nonshyGMO ingredients intheir US based restaurants The company was quick to receive criticism from severalnews sources accusing Chipotle of being antishyscience despite accommodatingconsumer demands
Members of the group were quick to suggest ways to address this accusation favoringan approach that is accepting of scientific evidence and one that hopes to create adiscourse on the science behind genetic engineering and its impact on our wellnessand the planets Read More
