2050 Global Perspective

“9.2 billion people, generating a global GDP four times the size of

today's, requiring 80% more energy (with most coming from fossil fuels).”

“‘Locking in’ of global warming, with a rise of as much as 6° C (about 10.8°

F) predicted by the end of the century.”

Today’s World

More people on earth have access to cell phones than toilets.

Out of the world's estimated 7 billion people, 6 billion have access to mobile phones.

2.5bn smart phones.

“The amount of data on the planet is set to grow 10-fold in the next six years to 2020 from around 4.4 zettabytes to 44ZB.”

=$2.5tn total market value.

Why is this happening?

We’ve been getting serious about tech in British Columbia as well.

With 92,700 employees and $26 billion in revenue in 2014, BC is already one of the largest tech sectors in Canada, and still

growing at 3.3% per year. It now employs more people than the mining, oil and gas

and forestry sectors combined.

But, is this disruption real?

500K cars per year by 2020.

Ford’s roadmap for disruption (2020 / 2021) •A Fully electric small SUV with an estimated range of at least

300 miles. •A hybrid version of the F-150 pickup and Mustang •A high-volume autonomous vehicle designed for commercial

ride hailing or ride sharing. •A Transit Custom plug-in hybrid available in 2019 in Europe. •Two new, pursuit-rated hybrid police vehicles

“Our investments and expanding lineup reflect our view that

global offerings of electrified vehicles will exceed gasoline-

powered vehicles within the next 15 years.”

2025 to 2030 will usher in wide legislation across many countries

on selling only zero-emission vehicles.

Alaska Airlines is using a 20% blend of renewable alcohol-to-jet biofuel.

http://www.bidsalaska.com/business-news/1.126101-alaska-airlines-flies-on-worlds-first-cornbased-jet-fuel.html

The renewable fuel is made from sustainable corn grown and harvested by farmers who

incorporate sustainable best practices from seed to harvest.

The Rise of Renewables

“At the 7% growth rate for geothermal and biomass generation worldwide, the

amount of electricity from this category will double every ten years. If this growth rate remains steady, geothermal and biomass

will generate 1,000 TWh by 2025.”

http://www.computerweekly.com/news/2240217788/Data-set-to-grow-10-fold-by-2020-as-internet-of-things-takes-off

“If the current growth rates can be maintained for the next

decade, wind will contribute about 28% of worldwide

generation and solar 66%.”

http://www.computerweekly.com/news/2240217788/Data-set-to-grow-10-fold-by-2020-as-internet-of-things-takes-off

Which is great but it doesn’t happen overnight. Or does it?

Five of the world’s six largest solar-module manufacturing firms.

The largest wind-turbine manufacturer.

The world’s largest lithium ion manufacturer.

The world’s largest electricity utility.

“We currently operate about 5.2 GW of renewable generation capacity and are the

world’s 8th largest company in onshore wind.”

Johannes Teyssen, CEO E.ON

“This management equation, big data mining, technical competence is obviously something this world needs. And E.ON will

strive to be a capable partner in that.”

From now until then…

“BC’s Renewable & Low Carbon Fuel Requirements Regulation is

making great progress.”

“Natural gas is the simplest hydrocarbon (CH4), so it's the cleanest, and probably the best

bridge fuel to renewables.”

rest of the U.S. economy.”

BC 2050 The Opportunity

A more circular economy will: •Create opportunities for growth •Reduce waste •Drive greater resource productivity

•Deliver a more competitive economy.

Sustainable production

Operations optimization and R&D

Renewables and biomass research and R&D

Innovative waste management

The greatest natural resources we will have in British Columbia will be the

people we have living here, the renewables energy we harvest, and

the intellectual property we generate.

We will be bound by a purpose. To live a great life, and to help everyone else in Canada, and the World also live like that.

We will be a province with an economy built on innovation

across a number of areas including renewables, Energy Storage, Data

Infrastructure, healthcare, smart cities, quantum computing etc.

What I hope is that British Columbia becomes an

‘exponential province’ that acts as a beacon to the rest of Canada, and the world.

Ethics

2017 marks the start of golden era in energy & technology.

With technological growth we will need natural resources more than ever and we will demand that extraction and processing will be as sustainable, ethical

and clean as possible.

Together we can create the future.

Thank You.
