Engineers, Research workers etc. in all over the country.
Since long GCPC is promoting CP/CT concept in the industries of the state, through its various
activities. We are thankful to Dr. Indrani Chandrashekharan, Director EI, MoEF, GOI for giving GCPC
an opportunity to work as Node of ENVIS, under which the message of CP-CT can be disseminated in a
broader way.
For the better performance of GCPC-ENVIS Node, We are grateful to the Varioud Industrial
Associations and their members, and also to GIDC officers and staff members, for sparing their valuable
time and continuous support.
We are thankful to all ENVIS Node for sharing their information through News-Letters, Website
and other sources.
ABOUT GCPC
Gujarat, for ages together has been known to an entrepreneur’s dreamland. A state that brings
together all the amenities to make some of the most crucial industrial dreams an absolute reality !
In doing, so Gujarat in the country has become a torchbearer of development. From Textiles to
Petrochemicals, From Fertilizers to Pharmaceuticals, from Chemicals to Engineering, the state has
created success stories one after the other.
Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) as organization for industrial development
has so for established 300 industrial estates, out of which 12 estates have been developed to
accommodate chemical industries. At their estates for treatment of waste, CETPs have been constructed,
also secured landfill sites have been executed and being used for solid waste disposal.
But, at this juncture that one needs the total realization that harnessing an industry also brings in
the responsibility of protecting the environment. CP is based on PROACTIVE and PREVENTIVE
approach: it makes much sense since it believes in avoiding creation of a problem rather than in trying to
solve it. Realizing then potential of CP in the state of Gujarat , Gujarat Cleaner Production
Center(GCPC) was established in August 1998 with the technical support of NCPC and UNIDO and
with the financial support of GIDC, The nation has four Cleaner Production Centers of which GCPC is
one. GUJARAT CLEANER PRODUCTION CENTRE plays an important role in education,
permeating and providing knowledge as well as expertise to tackle with various environmental issues
that the various sectors of the industry shall need to address in the current scenario or in the near future.
GCPC believes in prevention rather that cure. Hence, the germination of the concept of CLEANER
PRODUCTION or CP.
GCPC through its various Orientation Programmes, Training Programmes Demonstration
Projects etc has been successfully able to spread the message of Cleaner Environment in various sectors
of the industry. In the era, where competition is maximum, if a spirit for adopting CP techniques is
achieved , then probably half the battle will be won. We can then perhaps, with pride give our coming
generation a better world to live.
Apart from its Main Objectives GCPC is also working on some National as well as International
Projects i.e EMCBTA project of Moef, GOI and “Clean Technology Promotion in India” Project of
State secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The State being one of the most progressive one, as far as
industrial development is concerned, various sectors have been coming forward to adopt the CP
techniques.

1) Web-Site of GCPC :- In today’s era the most recent source for dissemination of information is web
site. Web-site of GCPC has been already finalized and will be launched in scond week of August.
Web-site has been registered with the name of “www.gcpcgujarat.org” and further communication
with the GCPC node will be made through our new email address info@gcpcgujarat.org. Web-site
will include all the information related to CP-CT i.e. from introduction to success stories. We will
also try to solve the problems related to production, processes, technologies, waste management,
pollution prevention etc., whatever we received through our ‘Query Form’ of web-site/Newsletter.
We hope by this way we can fill the gaps between service providerS and stakeholders.
2) GCPC-ENVIS News-Letter :- First issue of the GCPC-ENVIS News-Letter has been published in
the month of June –2003. It has been decided to publish News Letter quarterly. More information
will be provided in subsequent News Letter. The News-Letter will contain different chapters about
CP-CT methodologies, success stories, recent events, information about recent trends in CP and
forthcoming events regarding CP. The News Letter has been circulated to all the nodes, concerned
Government Department, Industries and Industries Associations, Academic Institutions, Consultants,
NGOs involved in the field of CP-CT etc.. Next issue of News Letter will be published in the month
of September-2003.
3) Identification of Data Gaps and Action Taken:- The center has decided to study of major unit
process/unit operations, CP-CT practices used in SSIs of Chemical Sector in the state. One such
study has been completed in the Ankleshwar Industrial Estate, in which information regarding
product manufacturer, unit processes and unit operations involved the present practice is included.
Following type of industries have been covered i.e. Dyes & Dyes intermediate (22), Chemical (15),
Pharmaceutical (7), Inorganic (5), Petrochemical (1). The aim of the study is to identify the Gaps
between current practices used in the industries and latest technologies available at national and
international level. With the identification of these gaps the road map for implementing Clean
Technologies in this industries can be decided.

4) Database Creation and Collection on CP-CT :- GCPC is a nodal agency to work for CP
practices in the state. We have started multidimensional activities for further spreading the
concept of CP. The center has completed around 20 CP Assessment Project in different sectors
like Chemical and Petrochemicals, Dyes & Dye Intermediates, Pharmaceuticals, Textile, Fish
Processing etc. Most of these industries have implement major CP tools suggested. Success
Stories of the same has been documented and will be disseminated through Web-Site, News-
Letter and other sources for the multiplayer effect. The center has also published literature like
Leaflets, Booklets etc in regional language. One of the main objectives of GCPC, includes to
create the data bank on CP-CT. We have developed a good library comprising Books, Journals,
Training Manuals, Reports, Directories of Industrial Estates related to CP-CT and Environment
Management.
5) To have Linkages of Information Users and Providers among Governments, Academic,
Business and NGOs in the Country and Abroad :- Today there are 22 Cleaner Production
Centres located in almost in all continents from Latin America to Africa, East Europe and Asia.
There is major role of UNIDO and UNEP in establishing these centers. India also has 4 regional

Apart from working as Node, GCPC is engaged to work on its main objective. For promotion of CP
Concept in the state, GCPC has taken following activities…
[1] ORIENTATION PROGRAMMES
To achieve its goals, GCPC has started its activities form the first step i.e. C.P. Awareness Programmes.
Because the concept of CP is new for the industries as their mind sets are convinced on End Of Pipe
(EOP) concept, it is necessary to aware the people about C.P.
GCPC has been so far conducted more then 40 Orientation Programmes in various Industrial Estates as
well as in Engineering Institutions.
[2] DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS: (CP Assessment)
This is most crucial step of C.P. wherein detail study of process, waste streams, cause options
etc.. are studied. After this exercise C.P. potentials with options are identified and each options is
evaluated from technical, financial and environmental point of view. It takes about 4 to 6 months
duration. At the end, the report is handed over to entrepreneurs for its implementation. Gujarat State has
all sector of industries i.e. Chemical, Fertilizers, Pharmaceuticals, Electroplating, Engineering etc.
Chemical Industries of Gujarat are producing @ 30% of total national production. It is in this context,
GCPC has given priority to Chemical Industries for Demonstration Projects.
GCPC has completed 15 demonstration projects and many demonstration projects are going on in
various sectors i.e. Dyes & Dye Intermediates, Chemical & Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical, Fish
Processing, etc. of Gujarat.
11
[3] Training Programmes:-
One of the majore activitie of GCPC is Training Programmes. GCPC has so far conducted many
training programmes. Main purpose of the Training Programm is to train the industry people as well
as engineering students of related field, about the Cleaner Production / Clean Technology
Methodology. GCPC officials have also undergone various Training Programme regarding CP / CT
methodology like : Intensive Training Programmes on CP /CT, Study cum information tour etc.
Member Secretary, GCPC has recently visited ACHIMA – 2003 (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland)
for study cum information tour, under the “CT tenchnology promotion in India” project of
SECO/UNIDO.
[4] Dissemination Programme :-
Even though cleaner production has explicit benefits, the concept has not really picked up in
Gujarat due to the absence of a coherent and close working group to facilitate the dissemination of
information and to provide guidance to the needy. In the absence of such a group, the success of CP has
been confined to few industries without any multiplier effect.
Now the present objective is to have the multiplier effect of CP through Dissemination Programmes in
the various industries across the entire state of Gujarat.
GCPC has so far conducted 2 dissemination programmes at.
1) NARODA Industrial Estate.
2) Ankleshwar Industrial Estate.
12
[5] CLEAN TECHNOLOGY PROMOTION IN INDIA (SECO/UNIDO PROJECT) :-
GCPC is working as a service provider for Dyes & Dyes Intermediate Sector of Gujarat, Project
is totally funded by UNIDO. Project involves various services like CT Assessment, CT Training, CDM,
POP, Information Service, Study Tour, etc. Total period of the project is 5 year. GCPC has signed an
