Blessed Sacrament Cathedral Weekly Meetings
The Feast of St. Blaise Blessing of Throats
The tradition of blessing throats began at
a time when the Church’s calendar was filled with blessings for the saints’ days.
Many of these are no longer practiced, but somehow the custom of blessing
throats survived. Since the Feast of St. Blaise falls on Sunday, February 3 this year, there will
be a general blessing of throats to the congregation at
each of the weekend Masses.
The Presentation of the Lord Blessing of Candles
Saturday, February 2, the Church celebrates
the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. In the gospel, Simeon calls Jesus a “light to the
nations,” and so this day is also Candlemas,
a feast of lights, on which candles for the year are blessed. Join us for the blessing of
candles at the 8 AM Mass. Candles for your home may be purchased in the vestibule of
the Church throughout the weekend.

Our Baptism Preparation Session will take place on February 3 at 1 PM in the Parish Office. Parents and expectant parents who would like to have their child baptized in the final weeks before Lent or in the early Easter Season should plan on attending.
Call the parish office if you plan on attending so the correct number of materials can be prepared. Parish Guidelines for Infant Baptisms can be found on our website under Sacrament Preparation. For information call Katie Zuzik 724-834-3710 or kzuzik@dioceseofgreensburg.org
The next session scheduled will be on April 7 at 1 PM.
In a matter of a few short weeks you will soon see the usual bulletin article for Extraordinary
Ministers of Holy Communion, Reader and Altar Servers to “please let Julie in the Parish Office know when you do not want to be scheduled for the March – April Mass schedule.” This the perfect time to have a refresher course on the scheduling procedures to avoid any future confusion. Here’s what you need to know: 1. Please let Julie know when you will not be available by
the date given in the bulletin. All requests and information are compiled and then sent to the schedulers. There is one scheduler for each Mass time who very generously gives of their time to prepare the schedules. It is important that your requests be returned in a timely fashion so that it allows the schedulers adequate time to complete their schedules, return them to the parish office and then be printed, sent via email and posted on the BSC website.
2. When returning your availability please note your name, Mass time and when you would not to be available to serve Mass.
3. It is a courtesy to everyone that when you are at ANY Mass and are available to serve to let a sacristan know that you can assist. On many occasions it is up to the sacristans to fill the positions open at any given Mass. This has proven difficult in many cases.
4. Once the schedules are prepared it is up you to find a replacement if there is a conflict with your schedule. Please do not contact the parish office to find a replacement for you.
5. Please update your email address if you are not receiving schedules via email.
We hope this helps you better understand the urgency for responding in a timely fashion and the importance of everyone giving their time to God when ministering at our parish. When you see the icon above, the information pertains to you so please take note. Thank you for your cooperation and God bless.
