BENEATH THE SKY // Project 1

Beneath The Sky

Group Project

The idea of the project was to create a beautiful roof that would bring light in from the sky, into a space of predetermined shape. The project brief was partly abstract, in that there was no particular location, other than that it was in Aberdeen (latitude 57°10’) and wasn't overshadowed by any structures.

Yokohoma International Port - The inspiration for a complicated roof.

Eric Moss, Umbrella - An image that stayed in my mind throughout, influencing my design and

causing it to appear “moulded” in the final outcome.

Church of St. John Baptist, Switzerland -The brain child behind the shadows I was later

to create with my design.

The Eden Project, England - The light shade, that would later develop in my mind into

a unique structure.

The inital concepts were simplistic domes, and uncomplex roofing structures

Slowly it began to evolve towards the rotated structure of the spiral, by the invention of the “axis”in my design. The centre of the structure, and thus which every piece would rotate round.

BENEATH THE SKY // Exploration of Form - Flex

I began to explore the roof as an individual. Exploring the shadows each shape creates, by simply changing the angle between each

segment, many combinations could be created. Here every so often the angle would change

direction.

After using the spiral as my chosen shapeI started to explore further possiblities, by ading more segments, and limiting the rotation. This allowed for less light to enterthe underneath structure, and hencecreated a more intresting shadow

eexperience.

After the form of the roof structure was designedwork turned to the exploration of how height affected the shadows, from this we discovered the optimum height, aswell as the optimum

bearing the roof was to be placed.

BENEATH THE SKY // Final Design

The final design, something I am very proud of, has a very strong moulded form, that creates a spectacular effect underneath. With the side walls having been shaped to maintain the flowing nature of the design.
