Objectives

Today, we will be learning to understand the Assyrians

and Chaldeans.

The Assyrians

*The Assyrians

*The Assyrian empire arose about 1,000 years after the rule of Hammurabi.

Defending themselves.

*900 B.C. – they started an empire.

*Assyrians Strength

*The Assyrian army was the first large army to use iron weapons, which was stronger than copper and tin.

*Hittites developed a stronger iron by heating iron ore, hammerit, and cool it rapidly.

Assyrians Strength

They fought with spears, daggers, bows and arrows, chariot, soldiers on horseback, ladders, platforms, and tree trunks.

*The capital of the Assyrian empire was on the Tigris River at Nineveh.

What kind of religion are they going to have?

The Assyrians built large temples and palaces, which statues and wall carvings.

*One of the first libraries was in Nineveh and held 25,000 tablets of stories and songs to the gods.

A Well-Organized Government

*The empire was divided into provinces, political districts.

*Each province was governed by an official who collected taxes and enforced laws.

*People began to rebel because of Assyria’s cruel treatment.

Why would they do that?

650 B.C. – Assyrians fought each other over rule.

*The Chaldeans rebelled and took control of Nineveh in 612 B.C.

*The Chaldeans rebuilt the city of Babylon. The city became the center of the Chaldeans’ empire.

The city was surrounded by a huge wall.

Inside the wall were palaces, temples, and a huge ziggurat. (300 ft high)

*Nebuchadnezzar ordered the Hanging Gardens to be built for his wife, who missed her green, mountainous homeland.

The Hanging Gardens were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The Chaldeans were merchants, artisans, and traders.

*Babylon was on a major trade route and profited from trade and caravans, groups of traveling merchants.

*The Chaldeans studied the sky to understand the gods. Their astronomers mapped the stars, planets, and phases of the moon.

*The Chaldeans lost control of their empire to the Persians, people to the NE of Babylon.
