Activity 1: Surveys of Favorite Things

First…

Turn over the survey that you completed upon entry.

Then…

Quietly share your information with your teammates. I will raise three fingers if you are getting too loud. You should then lower your voices. You will have ten minutes for this activity.

Activity 2: Team Building

• Determine what you have in common as team members.

• Create a name for your team.• Create a logo for your team.• Create a slogan for your team.• Place name, logo and slogan on poster paper

that I will bring around. Use the markers in the basket in the center of your table to create your team poster.

Reflection

Which of the three key elements of effective classroom instruction were used for the activity you just completed? Explain.

• Organization• Consistency• Trust Building

Let’s Review Organization

• Teacher Team area (physical environment)• Teacher Team procedures/expectations• Classroom (physical environment)• Classroom procedures/expectations• Instruction

Organization

Let’s consider physical environment:• Desk arrangement• Walls and bulletin boards• Materials needed for establishing routines• Etc.

Activity 3: Getting Organized

As a team, you will:• Make a list of strategies that would support

the key element of organization.• Place the list on poster paper that I will give

you.• Be prepared to explain how the strategies

provide support for classroom management.

Let’s Review Consistency

• Monitoring of procedures (team and classroom)

• Maintaining team and classroom areas• Planning units and creating a detailed plan for

each lesson• Use of Language (people first; affective

communication; praise for effort, not intelligence; professional communication, etc.

Activity 4: Staying Consistent

As a team:• Read the scenario that you were just given.• Devise a 1-2 minute skit that demonstrates

how this scenario might play out in the classroom. Each team member must contribute. You have 10 minutes to prepare. Begin now.

Let’s Review Trust Building

• Being organized• Being consistent• Showing evidence of caring

Trust Building

If you were asked to fall backwards with the assurance that someone would catch you, would you do it? Under what circumstances?

Activity 5: Building Trust

As a team:• One team member should select a topic from

the grab bag that has been placed on your group table.

• This person should read the topic, then explain how doing what is described would help to build trust with students.

• Pass the bag clockwise, having each team member follow the above direction until all topics have been discussed.

Scavenger Hunt

• The importance of seating charts

• Passing out papers efficiently• Lesson variety• Teacher demeanor• Tier I management

interventions• Teacher positioning for

conferring with students• Sample procedures for lavatory

use

Using the classroom management manual that you are being given, hunt for the topics on the list to the right. When you have finished, remain quiet and raise your hand.

Wrapping Up

Reflection

Turn to your neighbor and share two strategies that were discussed today that you might put into practice tomorrow.

When I give you the quiet signal (raised hand), get quiet and complete your exit pass.

Exit Pass

• On a sheet of paper, write one strategy that you will commit to trying this week. Put your name on the paper.

• After straightening your group area, picking up trash, and placing your chair under the desk, quietly exit, placing your exit pass in the basket near the door and trash in the trash can.
