N E W SBarbecue Sauce Lost

WithLaborDayhavingsignaledtheunofficialendofbarbequeseason,wewantedtotakealookbackatmuchlovedandmuchmissedStern’sFamousBarbecue. Locatedat12658WestWashingtonBlvd.,Stern’sattractedfansfromfarandwide.Openedin1922byIsidorStern,aTexasbutcher,Stern’seventuallyincludeda32-roommotelaspartoftheoperation.Isidor’snephew,Hal,wasthelastownerbeforea1983fireleadtotherestaurant’sclosure.Thoughtherestaurantcouldhavebeenrebuilt,theirkitchensetupwasgrandfatheredin,andupdatedfirecodesmeanttherecipescouldn’tbereplicated.HalSternmovedtoFlagstaff,Arizona,wherehebecamearealestatebrokerandhorseman. Stern’sbarbecuesauceisthelegendthatlingers,whichmanyrecallasbeingbrown-orangeinsteadoftheusualredcolor,servedhotwithmeatybits.ManyhavespeculatedthatthesaucecontainedXLNTchiliconcarne.OrmaybetherewasCoca-Cola?Possiblymustard? Usersofroadfood.comwereabletocontactHalSterninanattempttogettherecipe.Thesecret,accordingtoHal,weredrippingsandtrimmingsfromthemeatthatweregroundupandaddedtothesauce.Hewasreluctanttodivulgethelistofotheringredients,butalsostatedthat,sincetheirbarbecuedmeatwasincludedinthesauce,itisimpossibletoreplicateinanycase. WhileStern’sFamousBarbecueislonggone,CulverCity’sbarbecuetraditionliveson.OutdoorGrill,celebratingitstwentiethyearinoperation,openedjustdownWashingtonBlvd.fromwhereStern’swaslocated,SantaMariaBarbecuehasbeengoingstrongforoveradecade,andoverthepastyearbothHolyCowBBQandMapleBlockMeatCo.openedonSepulvedaBlvd.Andforthosewhowishtocontinuethesaucesearch,thereisevenaFacebookgroup(facebook.com/sternsfamousbbq)startedbyIsidor’sgreat-grandsonJeffMudrick,wholongsforthedaysof“HickorySmokedMeatsforaRobustTreat,”alongwitheveryoneelseintheknow.

Renteria,apropmasterforKnott’sBerryFarm,andShore,aninternationallyandnationallyknownconservatoroftextiles,willbeginwithavisualpresentationanddiscussionaboutthecostumecollectionheldintheArchivesandResourceCenter(ARC),andwillshowseveralcostumes.Coffey-Webb,CostumeHistorianProjectManagerfortheJamesG.GallanosFoundation,andauthorofManagingCostumeCollections:AnEssentialPrimer,willgivealivelyillustratedintroductiontothejoysandtrialsofcostumecollectionsofallshapesandsizes. Coffey-Webbwillbesellingherbookataspecialpriceandwillsignthem. TheARCwillbeopenafterthemeetingwhereadditionalcostumeswillbeondisplay. Membersandthepublicareinvitedtoenjoythisfreeprogram.EntryisthroughtheARCfromthebackparkinglot.

Walk with a Doc

Asyoumaybeaware,“WalkwithaDoc”startedinColumbus,Ohio,andweareprivilegedtohaveanactiveprograminCulverCitythankstoViceMayorJeffCooper,JeffreyPenso,MD,SarahCarpenter,MD,andGraceElliot.Thewalkshave

traditionallytakenplaceonthethirdSaturdayofthemonth,fromVeteransMemorialPark.Afterawarm-upwithBrandonWebb,andpertinentinfofromoneofthe“Docs,”participantsenjoythesuggestedrouteattheirownpace. TheCulverCityHistoricalSociety’sfirstpartneringwiththisprogramwasdesignedtothankorganizerGrace,andendedwithatouroftheHistoricalSocietyArchives.“Doc”Penso,amemberoftheHistoricalSociety,hasencouragedpartnershipswithotherwalks(expandedwalksthatfocusedonlocalpointsalongthelocalroutefromVeteransPark,andothersthroughDowntownCulverCity,TheCulverStudios,andtheHelmsDistrict).InhonorofourCentennial,ourCulverCityHistoricalSocietywillpartneragaintoofferauniquehistoricperspectivetoselectedtoursduringthiscelebratoryyear.
