BROFENBRENNER’S MODEL MACRO-SYSTEM

MESO-SYSTEM

MICRO- SYSTEM

MICRO-SYSTEM

The micro-system is the inner most layer of Brofenbrenner’s model of the ecological Map.

It contains “face-to-face settings with which the children are involved” (Bowes & Grace, 2009, pg 8), which thus, are the most direct influences on the child.

“Settings are seen to influence children not only through their physical features and activities, but through the personality and belief systems of people in those settings” (Bowes & Grace, 2009, pg 8)

MESO-SYSTEM

The meso-system is the next layer outside the micro-system. This system reflects the “interrelationships between settings in which the child actively participates” (Bowes &

Grace, 2009, pg 8), that is, the connections between the various activities and contexts of the child.

EXO-SYSTEM

The next layer of the model is the exo-system. This system influences the individual, however, from a distance, as there is no direct involvement with the characteristics of this layer. (Bowes & Grace, 2009)

It shows the “linkages between two or more settings.” (Bowes & Grace, 2009, pg 8)

MACRO-SYSTEM

The macro-system is the broadest and outer-most layer of the ecological map. It contains the “broad societal or cultural contexts,…set of values or cultural belief systems around which life in a society is organised” (Bowes & Grace, 2009, pg 8)

Influences are often on a global scale.
