Cons: No system to gather metrics Frequently seen as “piracy.”

Viruses, malware, and spyware

Piracy...CRIA - Michael Geist

“While the CRIA regularly trumpets commissioned studies for the problems posed by peer to peer, this week it released a major study without any fanfare whatsoever...”

Piracy...CRIA - Michael Geist

“...the survey asked for the sources of music on people’s computers. Among those who downloaded music from peer to peer services, the top source of music was ripping copies of their own CDs, (36.4%)...”

Piracy...CRIA - Michael Geist

“...followed by peer to peer downloads (32.6%), paid downloads (20.1%), shared music from friends (8.8%), downloads from artist sites (5.6%), and other sources (2.9%)...”

In other words...Piracy isn’t removing profits from the recording industry at the alarming rate that they would like for us to believe.

But, the promotion gained by giving away free samples is worth it’s weight in gold.

One problem remains...

When you give content away...
