Definition

The ability of a computer or other machine to perform those activities that are normally thought to require intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence of machines and the branch of computer science which aims to create it. Textbooks define the field as "the study and design of intelligent agents, "where an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions which maximize its chances of success.

History

The field was established at Dartmouth College in 1956 and given its name by a man named John McCarthy

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Blaise Pascal created the calculators. It could think but not on its own.

Arthur Samuel’s checker playing program learned to improve its own playing ability

Deep Blue program defeated world chess champion Gary Kasparov in 1997

Movies have been made about it.

Types of AI

Robots

Video games

Security Devices

GPS

Vechicles

Mars rover/NASA

Etc…

Asimo’s Purpose

Honda created Asimo to help around the house, to help the elderly and disabled.

The idea was to make him as friendly looking as possible

How Asimo Works

Has 34 degrees of freedom for walking

3 degrees of freedom in his neck

Speed sensors

A gyroscope sensor

Has a six axis floor sensor

He uses video cameras mounted in his head. Stereoscopic and algorithm vision allow him to see.

Controlled by 4 microprocessors

Asimo’s History

Asimo - Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility

1986 - Static walking

1987 - Dynamic walking

1991 - Walking like a pro

1993 - A more human-looking robot

1997 – ASIMO

2005 - Better, Faster, Stronger

Asimo In Development

E0 - Honda’s first two legged robot took it’s first steps in 1986

15

E1 - The first robot to achieve fast stable walking

5

E2 - achieved fast stable walking in the Human environment

6

E3 - More compact and had a more refined finish

7

E4 - The first robot to achieve fast stable walking on uneven surfaces, slopes and steps

8

E5 - More improvements to motion

9

Asimo Coming to Life

P1 - Honda’s first Humanoid bipedal walking robot. It stood 6’2 and weighed 386lbs

10

P2 - Received a face lift and skin to cover his insides

11

P3 - Got a lot better looking and was also in better shape than it’s predecessors. Standing 5”2 and weighing 287lbs, it was almost human like

12

In current form Asimo stands 4ft 3 inches tall and weighs a svelte 119 lbs

13

Asimo at a charging station. Powered by 51.8 volt lithium Ion battery, the running time is an hour.
