Thankful ThoughtsIt was Monday, November 23, 2009, and Barbara Matles expressedthankful thoughts (‘T'was the Night of Thanksgiving: Happy eatingto all, pass the cranberries please)…..We greeted the return of SteveJohnson….Ian Jackson’s sports report inexplicably and inexcusablyomitted Cal’s defeat of Stanford (Go Bears!)….Jay Harkenridercelebrated 21 years in Rotary (which means he must have reacheddrinking age—when it comes to Grandpa Jay, you couldn’t tellotherwise)….Vocational Director Richard Ackerman handed $1500from our Clubs Vocational Budget to the South Bay Literacy Council(if you can read this, thank a teacher), after which Richard announcedthat the Rotary Reads schedules will soon be out, after which Richard(does he ever rest?) recruited golfers for five openings in the LA5club’s upcoming tournament on December 15 at the LA Country Club(our club’s foursomes are made possible by LACC members JimHunter and John Akker).
Happy DollarsJames Caprell was impressed by the hard work, dedication and andquality of this years Club activity witnessed at the November Boardmeeting….Susan Adams attended the annual USC-UCLA District5280 Rotary Rally. Trojans outnumbered Bruins (we need more Bruinsnext year). Entertainment included USC Coach Pete Carroll, the Trojancheerleaders, USC Trojan Marching Band, Traveler—and a stirringacapela version of our Nations Anthem sung by our own PresidentJan (she got a gig out of it). Thanks to Dick Chase who donated twoUSC-UCLA tickets that were auctioned off by Susan Adams for$150 to Club Service Director Tom Jeffry. Way to start, Susan.

“Look for a continuation of locally themed volleyball tie-ins: forexample we recently met with theRotary Club of Manhattan Beach, and they suggested a friendly cross-town match against the LionsClub on Stadium Court. Events like this continue to build thecommunity feel of our events, bring more people out and simply createfun.” (This courtesy of Progam Chair Bill Keenan, whose businesspartner Don McLellan, is raising an aspiring AVP player.)
Matching Grant Project: Mali, AfricaInternational Director Donn Ennis and our Matching Grant Projectin Mali, Africa— to give you a flavor of what he and the Internationalteam are up to, here’s an excerpt from a recent update from theNomadHope Project: “All our local partners have signed extensiveagreements with us and Rotary, to assure expectations are understoodand designs specified by Engineers without Borders (EWB) areadhered to. We are installing the millet grinding machine at the schoolin Zouera this week. - this will be used by the school cook to preparethe daily meal for the students, in a couple of hours, rather than anentire day! While it is not being used by the school, the local womenwill pay to grind their millet to prepare breads and other products totake to market. They will now be able to make and sell a much highervolume of products in the same amount of time, and not incur theaches and pains of using the heavy pestle that has been the norm forcenturies. The revenue that the school will generate from this machinewill pay for the required parts and maintenance for the solar lightingand water tap stand! This machine is being sold, delivered by a localbusiness man from neighboring Timbuktu. He will also provide thetraining and support. Sustainability at its best.”
Craft TalkTim James (Auringer) was born in Duluth, Minnesota, roamed fromSioux City, Iowa to Okinawa to South Carolina to the Phillipines(courtesy of the U.S. Air Force, which had been his Dad’s career)before landing in Laguna Beach and forming a band (inspired by thememorable 1964 pre-MTV appearance of the Beatles on the EdSullivan Show), which led to a regular gig at the Cannery in NewportBeach, a chance encounter with Paul McCartney (“My knees wereshaking like a little girl”) and a lifelong friendship with LA Car GuyMike Sullivan. Tim has written 600 songs over the years, a lot of

which have been recorded, and has scored 20 B-movies (“DeadlyPrey,” “Born Killer,” and similarly uplifting titles). His “long andwinding road” led him to his beautiful wife Alisha, who is now LACar Guy’s environmental manager, her daughter Maddy (in the housethis day, as was Mom), and the icing on the cake is Lucy, their"labradoodle"! He continues to moonlight working with his own musicpublishing company, and is devoted to his current position as CIO(Chief Internet Officer) of LA Car Guy’s dealerships.
Mike Sullivan - LA Car GuySpeaking of Mike Sullivan (local surfer, environmental advocate, charitable and successful enterprenuer, husband and father, he wasour speaker, sharing a candid personal history of how he built hisempire of 10 current dealerships. He started out with one, his dad’s,and has grown to his present 700 employees and $600 million grossannual sales, with only slight downsizing during this past year ofrecession. Two of his three kids (all Costa alums) work with him, andhe’s recruiting the third. His extensive community activism featureschildren’s programs and environmental initiatives (his new solar panelson the house will enable him to be "off the grid"). He sells VW,Toyota, Lexus, Scion—all imports (he, for example, bought out VasekPolak), with a plug-in luxury hybrid (Fisker) coming out in July 2010.New cars are a loss leader, with profit coming from parts, servicesand used cars. 1/3 of his business is on line—hence, LA Car Guy.His marketing philosophy: It’s all about relationships and keepingpeople in the family. Thanking Mike for his service to the communitythe President gave him an END POLIO magnet to proudly display onone of his many cars (word has it he has done just that).
Season of GivingWe wrapped the morning with two inspiring speakers at the podium:First, a wide-eyed Magic In Giving Chair Anne Konie, gushing overhow proud she was to be leading this effort and passing out sponsorshippackages (for us to go forth and find those precious sponsors). Andfinally a Thanksgiving Benediction from Duke Winser: “You havebeen blessed so you can be a blessing to others.” Amen.
Yours in Rotary,Jim Hallett

Attendance & Make-upsAttendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Oursecretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with Dis-trict 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide.Let's help Lindy keep that attendance record high--report your make-up to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) Whatis a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcomeeven if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot!Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. Somake Lindy’s job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you'renot sure it's a make-up--hey, tell her anyway!
