As the story goes, in 1954 Dot Hubbard developed a great recipe and a brand new process for cooking Virginia peanuts. Friends and family loved Dot’s special peanuts and soon, through word of mouth, a true mail order business was born. In 1954, there weren’t many mail order businesses in the U.S.A. and even fewer who were shipping gifts of great food. There was no system for zip codes in the United States. UPS wasn’t operating in Virginia and FedEx had not yet been founded. At the time, there was no such thing as a credit card, so just imagine how orders were placed and delivered.

Every day back then, our mother went to the Sedley Post Office around the corner and picked up the mail. Customers who had learned through the “peanut vine” about Hub’s “home cooked” salted peanuts either sent checks with their order…one size, one price, one flavor... or were trusted to pay later. Mom cooked the peanuts to fill the daily orders and then took small boxes of Hubs to the Sedley Post Office. Our postmistresses, Willie and Hattie, would greet us warmly, fuss a little about all the packages we had brought, hand stamp each one, and put them on the mail truck to leave Sedley that day. It was very hard work, especially as the “peanut vine” spread, but it was oh, so simple.

With time and a growing business, cooking and mailing Hubs have become far more complicated. Ever changing technology, advances in the logistics industry, safeguarding of credit cards, vigilant monitoring of food safety, training, maintaining employee health and safety, working within various distribution networks, understanding increasing gov-ernment regulations, and many other factors are all a dizzying array of what makes a business tick today.

As a child who grew up in the business, it is easy to wish for the “good ole days” of Hubbard Peanut Company. And yet, being part of the evolution of changes, one thing is very clear to me: we’re better than ever! Not only are Hubs the same great peanuts as always, more options are available today, ordering is easier, delivery is quicker, and tracking is more efficient. You can visit us and see our operation in Sedley through our YouTube video without leaving the comfort of your home. Facebook gives us another opportunity to get to know each other and email is an instantaneous way for us to connect.
