Growing Believers Update By Vicki Rainbow
Breaking News! Update! This just in!
All of these “attention getting state-
ments” are used to tell us: ”Don’t miss
this. Pay attention! This is important!”
As the Growing Believers Team, we too
have information for you that is impor-
tant, news that you’ll want to hear –
news of how God is beginning to use all
of us at SMBC to live out ministry ideas
from our Growing Believers Team’s
three initiatives.
You may remember our Growing Be-
lievers Team’s initiatives centered
around: (1) Small Group Studies; (2)
Personal Disciplines; and (3) Sacred
Spaces. As we considered each of these
three areas, we then asked, how is our
Mission Statement of “Loving & Lead-
ing People into a Growing Relationship
with Jesus” being fulfilled through these
initiatives?
We asked questions such as: “What
types and groupings of studies can we
provide to help believers grow in their
relationship with God and one another?”
“How can we help believers grow in
their relationship with God through per-
sonal devotions?” “How can we help
draw believers closer to God through our
physical plant and our environment (i.e.,
our sacred spaces at SMBC)?” Every-
thing we talked about, dreamed about
and planned centered on developing and
enhancing an individual’s personal rela-
tionship with our loving God.
Here are just a few things God,
through willing SMBC folks, will ac-
complish in Growing Believers:
* We will be establishing two
“implementation teams” with Growing
Believers. One will focus on Small
Groups and one will focus on Spiritual
Disciplines. Is this an area of interest for
you?
* We will seek to have representation on
the Building and Grounds Ministry Team
for growing believers “through sacred
spaces on campus.” The goal will be to
evaluate every space around campus and
see how we can enhance it to help be-
lievers grow in their faith. Is this an area
of interest for you?
* We want to partner with a Technology
Team to focus specifically on how tech-
nology on campus, and online, can help
believers to grow in their faith. Is this an
area of interest for you?
Just a few other exciting items that
came out of the many “brainstorming”
meetings by the Growing Believers
Team have already been implemented:
* Have you noticed the Bible verses
scrolling on the monitors around cam-
pus?
“Helping teachers, help students.”
It’s not too late to sign up to volunteer to be a Tutor or a Classroom Helper at St. Mat-
thews Elementary School. These duties would require you to work in a specific class-
room one hour per week for the entire school year. If you have been reluctant to par-
ticipate because you cannot be available every week, you can still sign up to serve as a
substitute for one of our regular volunteers on those rare occasions that one is unable to
meet their weekly commitment. You can get an application on Sunday from the volun-
teer at the table outside Fellowship Hall or the Sanctuary, or call Emily Thompson at
the church office at 896-8882.
Also, there are still many options remaining for school supplies to be donated. Please
review the big blue board outside Fellowship Hall or the Sanctuary and decide which
supplies you can contribute. Select a card listing the supplies requested, purchase the
supplies, then place them inside the designated collection boxes outside the worship
centers by August 4. See Growing...Page 3

Invite Cards available! The Growing Our Church team in-
troduced an Invite Card on Sunday,
June 2 during their presenta-
tion. The Invite Card is the size of
a business card and has a picture of
our church and contact information
on one side and our Sunday morn-
ing schedule on the other. The card
is designed to be used when inviting
someone to our church. If you did
not get several of these cards, please
look for them at the Welcome Cen-
ter or in the church office. If you
did receive cards, please give them
away and come get some
more! The purpose of the cards is
to help us become better inviters!
Parent’s Meetings! David Garrard will be leading Par-
ent’s Meetings for parents of chil-
dren and preteens on Sunday morn-
ing, August 25—the first Sunday of
our new church year. The meetings
will be held in room 217 (off the
Chapel) at 8:45 and 11:00
a.m. David will share important
information about the upcoming
year. Please mark your calendar
now and plan to join us.
Fall Retreat for Children! The 2013 Fall Retreat for Children
(grades 4-6) is set for September 27
-29 at Hidden Falls Camp in Bed-
ford, IN! The theme is Tricks and
Truth! Besides being great fun, the
Fall Retreat influences children

We are so pleased to announce
Missey McMillan as the Director of
Weekday Preschool Ministries for
SMBC!
For those of you who know Mis-
sey, you know the Weekday Pre-
school Ministry Team of SMBC did
a fabulous job in hiring her. Missey
has served as Director of our Par-
ents Day Out for the past seven
years. Prior to that Missey was a
Teacher in our Weekday Preschool
for four years. She also has voca-
tional experience and training in the
area of Social Work and Child and
Human Development and served as
Education Manager for the Junior
Achievement Program in Chatta-
nooga, Tennessee where she man-
aged over 350 programs. Missey is
married and has three children. Mis-
sey has been very involved in her
children’s schools volunteering in
various roles including having been
PTA President at St. Matthews Ele-
mentary School and at Barret Tradi-
tional Middle School.
Missey brings a love for God and
for people. She has endeared herself
to everyone who works alongside
her. She often is found extending
care beyond what is expected as she
learns of needs. Her unwavering
commitment to young children, or-
ganizational skills, and hands-on
experience will be a positive asset
to this role.
This “new” role will mean that
she will be Director for both Week-
day Preschool and Parents Day Out.
We will be hiring two Assistants to
the Director: One Assistant to the
Director for Weekday Preschool
and One Assistant to the Director
for Parents Day Out. Each of the
Assistants to the Director will work
Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 –
1:30. Missey and I will be working
on job descriptions and hiring for
these two positions in the upcoming
weeks. Missey will have office
hours here on Tuesday and Thurs-
day from 8:30 – 1:30 and on Mon-
day, Wednesday, and Friday from
8:30 – 12:30.
We are intentionally entering this
next year as a “Transition Year.”
We know that there is much to be
learned as we have one Director for
these two important ministries. To-
ward the end of this Transition Year
the Weekday Preschool Ministry
Team and I will, together with Mis-
sey, evaluate the Transition Year
and decide at that time how to best
structure our Weekday Ministries
for subsequent years. We know that
this year will be unique and we ask
for your help and your prayers as
we all work together in making
SMBC Weekday Preschool Minis-
tries the best place for young chil-
dren and their families!
I also want to express special thanks
to Marsha Stone, Chair of our
Weekday Preschool Ministry Team,
and her team for their gift of time in
this exciting process.
Please join me in welcoming
Missey to this new and expanded
ministry role!
Most sincerely,
Joyce B. Oliver, Ed.D.

Thank You
St. Matthews Baptist Church,
We got your card today and as
sincerely as we can say it, thank
you, and may God bless each and
every one of you.
We love all our sisters and broth-
ers in Christ, and St. Matthews
Baptist Church has been our home
for over a quarter of a cen-
tury. What an honor to be a partner
in Christ through St. Matthews
Baptist.

St. Matthews Elementary On Wednesday morning July 17, a
very hot day, we met at St. Mat-
thews Elementary School on
Browns Lane, ready and eager to
work. The work that day consisted
of spraying and pulling weeds,
spreading mulch, washing windows,
and replacing the doors on a storage
shed and painting it. Thank you to
everyone who participated for your
help in making the day a success.
In 2012, the church saw a com-
munity need and decided to partner
with the nearby school. St. Mat-
thews Baptist Church has supplied
copy paper for the teachers, back-
packs for students, and food for dis-
advantaged children.

* Did you participate in the prayer
guide written for VBS; or the 40
Days of Prayer guide used during
the time the Growing Teams were
meeting; or what about the prayer
guide we have each week of Sum-
mer Missions? The Growing Be-
lievers Team recognizes the power
of prayer and the difference prayer
makes in growing believers.
* Beginning in September, we will
have a church-wide Bible Study on
Jesus. “Who Is This Man?” will be
studied in small groups and Pastor
Greg will be preaching on this sub-
ject. All ages, preschool through
adult, will be focusing on this spe-
cial emphasis.
It is our prayer that many of you
reading this article are already ex-
cited and ready to get involved in
one or more of these areas. If so,
Terry Seelow or Joyce Oliver would
love to visit with you further. Also,
would you spend some time seeking
God, and His direction for SMBC
as we move ahead together with one
mind and one heart focusing on
growing believers?
