Growing Community Where do you find community? How do you connect with others? How does our

church create a warm fellowship with two worship services? How do we create the

kind of community that others want to be a part of? How can we prevent people from

falling through the cracks? How can we enhance our intergenerational community?

When God created us, he created us to be in community. It’s interesting how dif-

ferent we are -- newborn babies to 100 year-olds -- diverse theological commitments -

- extroverts and introverts -- thinkers and feelers -- detail people and big picture peo-

ple -- longterm members and newcomers -- singles, divorced, marrieds -- early service

attenders and late service attenders..... Yet, in our differences we are united by a com-

mon purpose of “Loving and Leading people into a Growing relationship with Jesus.”

In Total Church Life, Darrell Robinson writes,

Fellowship is one of the keys to the effectiveness of a church. A church will

never grow beyond its fellowship. If the fellowship is right the church will

continue to minister, witness in love, and be built up in maturity and number.

But if the fellowship is not right, the church will decline and eventually die.

If the fellowship is right, the church can work through any problem and con-

tinue to grow. But if the fellowship is disrupted, everything else goes down.

Attendance will drop. Giving will decrease. Outreach will stop! Building the

fellowship of a local church is crucial to its growth.

The Growing Community Team’s goal is to come up with 10-12 ideas that will

generate a closer community. We met twice in January to brainstorm, with future

meetings scheduled. We are challenging ourselves to think outside the box and allow

God to do something that only God can do!

Our team is made up of: Judy Jenkins, team leader, Nancy Beck, Jim Cordell,

Amanda Cotton, William Oliver, Lisa Porter, and Andy Vincent. Tim Galyon and

Mary Ellen Yates serve as staff liaisons.

Please pray for us as we meet over the coming months. If you have ideas and sug-

gestions, any member of our team would love to listen!

Halftime Activity Please pray for Trip Fetter who will be leading the Halftime Activity on Sat-

urday. The BIG TRUTH for the day is that the Christian faith and the Chris-

tian life are about grace—grace given and grace received, despite perform-

ance that is often poor.

HUGG Highlights

Julia Decker

Lincoln Hills Health Center

326 Country Club Drive

New Albany, IN 47150

Julia Temple Raper was born on

February 3, 1949, in Murfreesboro,

Tennessee to Charles Joyce Raper

and Dorothy Delaine Rogers Raper.

Julia was the youngest of two

daughters. Julia’s father went to

law school at Vanderbilt, and served

as the City Judge of Murfreesboro.

Her mother was an elementary

school teacher.

When Julia was 10 years old, her

parents divorced, and she and her

mother moved to Beaufort, South

Carolina to be close to other family

members. After graduating from

Beaufort High School, she then

went to the University of South

Carolina at Beaufort, where she

earned an associates degree in jour-

nalism.

At college, she met Arthur

Decker, a Marine stationed at Parris

Island who was attending college

part-time. Julia and Arthur married

on January 16, 1968. They moved

to Roanoke, Virginia. Julia and Ar-

thur were blessed with three chil-

dren: Arthur, Danielle and Kerry.

The family also lived in Cayce,

South Carolina, and then moved to

Spartanburg due to a job change.

As a journalist, Julia’s career in-

cluded working for the Spartanburg

Herald, the Beaufort Gazette and

the Greenville News. She has also

worked in telemarketing.

After 28 years of marriage, Julia

and Arthur divorced. "It was a hard

time, but it was necessary," says

Julia.

Julia names Amazing Grace and I

Sing a Song of the Saints of God as

her favorite hymns. She has at-

tended the Episcopal Church most

of her life. "I always like making

palm crosses at Easter," she

says. In 2008, she made 30 to 40

for Easter.

Julia's hobbies include reading,

writing poetry, and in the past, she

enjoyed painting with oils and

acrylics. She also plays the piano.

Julia has had strokes which re-

quired her to live in an assisted liv-

ing center in Spartanburg. In De-

cember 2008, Julia moved to New

Albany into Lincoln Hills Nursing

Center to be closer to her daughter

and son-in-law, SMBC members,

Danielle and Jeff Hudgins.
