Overview

• The Paperless Department, launched 2012– No photocopying– Moodle – No essay writing for Btec students, reduced

AS & A2 essays– AV feedback introduced 2014

• Has seen 17% increase in High Grades for Btec students (2012,13 cohort)

AV Essays

• Mini documentary• Multiple examples• Student voiceover – avoids too much writing (text on

screen) minimal mechanical English errors

Advantage

• More secure way to construct essays.• Leapfrog straight to Merit - then concentrate

on getting to Distinction level• Improves editing skills - double decker

sessions• Better engagement with the subject• Emphasis on students working

However

• Feedback still written• Time consuming• Students did not read & act on feedback• Interested in Grade only• Disconnect between student work and

feedback

• Pilot group, Yr13 Btec Sub Dip Creative Media

• Moodle forum used to upload student work

• Staff use Quicktime to record feedback

• Feedback to forum• Student response was

positive – preference to written.

Using Quicktime

Open Quicktime, File, select new screen recording.This will allow you to record what happens on the screen including av essay and the pausing of it etc.

From screen recording select built-in-microphone so that teacher voice can be recorded.

Select area of click for whole screen. This will record anything and voice for feedback.

Advantages

• Feedback is specific, targeted & individualised• Students eager to listen to feedback• Can be replayed as often as required• Same format to work- easier to understand• Apply feedback• No extra time required• Content & assess student knowledge• Develop av editing skills

Other Advantages

• Record one-to-one discussions – including any visits to webites, Youtube, theory etc.

• Record Team discussions• Record Staff Team Feedback• Record standardisation & moderation sessions

• Provide client response evidence (new assessment windows for Btec 2014)

No Quicktime?

• iPhones, iPads, phones, Camtasia – anything you can record on and then upload to students email, VLE, folders etc.
