Pontefract couple smash 5,500-mile fundraising challenge for Canine Partners Jo Jarvis (29) and Terry Harrison (35) from Pontefract have achieved their challenge to cycle 5000 miles and run 500 miles this year, raising funds for Canine Partners - an organisation that trains dogs to assist people with disabilities. Between them to date they have clocked over 5,000 cycling miles each and Jo has done 563.5 miles of running, making a total distance covered an impressive 10,563 miles; raising nearly £600. With a passion for exercise, Jo and Terry set themselves this long distance challenge at the beginning of the year. One of Jo’s work colleagues at Teva UK in Castleford told her about Canine Partners and after finding out just what they do, she was totally sold so decided to use this challenge as a way to raise funds for the Charity. Despite smashing their target, they will continue to clock up more miles and raise funds for Canine Partners until the end of the year. Jo comments, “Being an animal lover, when I found out what a canine partner can achieve for someone with disabilities, it touched my heart. The fact we have raised nearly £600 to help give people with disabilities their lives and independence back, makes it worth all the effort. We have competed in a number of organised events such as Prince of Wales Cycle Event and Leeds Half Marathon, the most recent being the Yorkshire Marathon. We also set our own challenge of doing 100 miles each month, so we could be sure to reach our goals.” Pam Quick from Yorkshire has Antiphospolipid Syndrome and spinal cord degeneration, she was matched with canine partner Alucia in 2012. She comments, “From the minute I visited Canine Partners, I realised that tasks which had been a barrier for me were easy for a dog to do. Alucia fetches the post and picks up dropped items. She fetches her own bowl from the cupboard, returns it when she has finished eating and lifts my foot onto my wheelchair. At the shop she can get a two-pint container of milk without putting her teeth through the plastic. She is always happy with a waggy tail, and is excited to do things on a daily basis - I don’t know what I did before her.” To support Jo and Terry, please visit www.justgiving.com/TheWobblersChallenge For further information on how you can help Canine Partners by taking on a challenge, fundraising, volunteering and much more please contact 08456 580480 or visit www.caninepartners.org.uk.

About Canine Partners

Canine Partners is a registered charity that assists people with disabilities to enjoy a greater independence and quality of life through the provision of specially trained dogs, whose well-being is a key consideration. More than 1.2 million people in the UK use a wheelchair, and a significant number of those would benefit from a canine partner. The dogs are carefully matched to the applicant’s needs and lifestyle, no matter how challenging. They are trained to help with everyday tasks such as opening and shutting doors, unloading the washing machine, picking up dropped items, pressing buttons and switches and getting help in an emergency. The Charity is working in partnership with Help for Heroes, and aims to train dogs to meet the needs of people with even the most complex disabilities including members of HM Armed Forces. These life transforming dogs also provide practical, physiological, psychological and social benefits including increased independence and confidence as well as increased motivation and self-esteem. A canine partner also brings companionship, a sense of security and increases social interaction. Canine Partners receives no government funding and is wholly dependent on public donations and legacies.

Well I don’t care, Here at Bentleys we have been planning Christmas since August. We love Christmas and we’ve always been big kids at heart and what we have found is Christmas generally brings out the best in people; opening doors, letting you out at junctions and there always seems to be a little more friendliness in the air. That paragraph may have sounded a bit like the start to a church sermon but that’s not what we wanted to chat to you about, no, we would like to explain the mythical Christmas tree… the various types, how to care for one and to let you know how much difference having a real Christmas tree in a house can make.

How Many Varieties? Firs are by far the most popular due to the great fragrance and very low needle drop and also, in my opinion, they are the most stunning if you buy a premium grade one! Never buy less quality than Premium grade. Within this family are Nordman and Fraser. The Fraser is a lovely tree but more than likely you will come across Nordman Fir trees. The Nordman has the perfect Christmas tree shape, has very low needle drop (depending on the quality) and they smell fantastic. Spruce is the old style of tree, which has quite sharp needles and does drop its needles a lot. Spruce comes in White, Norway and the stunning Blue Spruce. Our advice is only use a Spruce outside unless it is potted.

What to Check When Buying Firstly is the tree “Premium” grade. This is the best grade. If the seller says it’s a First, or Grade A, Standard etc etc then its NOT Premium grade and beware. Not wanting to bore you but the more trees that are grown in a field means higher profits for the grower but weaker and not as well formed trees. Premium grade trees have more room to grow naturally but therefore the tree grower gets less trees from that field and so they are more expensive but they are a “Happy Tree” that has been allowed to grow strong with a lot of light and so on. This is why you should only buy the best grade tree. Lets not get to the 24th and have a shabby looking tree!

Does Watering A Cut Tree Make a Difference? The simple answer is YES. If you have a screw up stand then cut off the first inch or so of the trunk so the tree can drink. Then use a stand that holds water. If you use a drilled system that we use here at Bentleys then no need to cut the trunk. All you do is sit the tree on one of our specially designed pin stands (that hold water) and your tree is up in 30 seconds. The new drilled system is the best system in the world. Fast to put your tree up, perfectly straight in 30 seconds and ensures the tree can take on the water. A real Christmas tree makes a great difference to a house at Christmas. Choosing your tree is a lovely event and a great tradition. Decorating the tree with the kids or together with a glass of your favourite tipple is the start of a magical time and a great Christmas tree gives real soul to a house. We have over 700 Premium grade trees all-undercover, set out in our famous Christmas forests. We can add fairy dust to your tree for free, free local delivery, free tree transport bag, sweets for the kids, make it a tradition and have a very merry Bentleys Christmas.
