An examination of the Named Person

Role in Practice

GIRFEC

• The wellbeing of all children and young people is at the centre of GIRFEC

• There are eight well-being indicators which provide a common language for practitioners and ensure that all aspects of well being are promoted, supported and safeguarded.

• The eight indicators are safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included.

The Named Person

• Health Boards have a duty to provide a named person for all children residing within their area.

• The Local Authority has a duty to provide a named person for all children residing within their area of school age.

The Functions of the Named Person

• To advise, inform or support the child or parent

• To help the child or parent to access a service or support

• To discuss or raise a matter regarding the child with another service or agency which may be able to provide information or support to the child and family

Midwifery role

• Best practice and the Named Midwife• Midwife as Named Person in Highland• The Named Person for the new-born child will

routinely be the mothers named midwife where they are employed by or commissioned by the Health Board

baby?• What can I do now to help this woman or baby?• What can my service do to help this woman or baby?• What help, if any, may be needed from others?

Health Visitor Role

• The health visitor provides a universal service to all pre school children

• This involves a series of core contacts where the focus is on the well-being of the child and parent

• The Health Visitor is able to identify at an early stage using the well-being indicators those children and families where early intervention will support promote and safeguard well-being by quickly developing a support network

• Do I have all the information I need to help this child or parent

• What can I do now to help this child or parent• What can my service do to help this child or

parent• What help, if any, may be needed from others?

The Named Person in Education

• Generally the Named Person in Education will be a promoted member of staff within a school

• Support is provided to the child/young person through day to day activities within the school following the principles of GIRFEC supported by the Curriculum for Excellence

• The Named Person will be able to identify at an early stage where there are any concerns about any aspect of the child’s well being using the well-being indicators
