What is an invigilator?The person in the examination room responsible for conducting a particular examination in the presence of candidatesThey have a key role in upholding the integrity of the external examination/assessment processThe role of the invigilator is to ensure that the examination is conducted as per the JCQ ‘ICE’ booklet

Why do you need invigilators?The invigilator is present at all times to ensure:

That all candidates have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their abilities

Security at all times - before, during and after the exam

That possible candidate malpractice is prevented

That possible administrative failures are prevented

The requirementsWritten examinations:

At least one invigilator must be present for each group of 30 candidates or fewer

Practical examinations (Art timed tests, timetabled ICT and Science practical exams)

At least one invigilator must be present for each group of 20 candidates or fewer

Supervise candidates throughout the whole time the examination is in progress - giving their complete attention to this duty at all times

Remain aware of emerging situations

Move around the assessment area quietly and at frequent intervals

Malpractice and other IrregularitiesIrregularities in the examination room must be recorded If a candidate is suspected of malpractice, the invigilator must warn the candidate that he/she may be removed from the examination roomRemind invigilators that they must record what has happened in the examination room.

In a case of suspected malpractice, invigilators should remove and keep any unauthorised material

On-screen testsIf possible use invigilators who are competent in the use of ITDuring an on-screen test candidates may have to share access to a printer.

Remind your invigilators that work may need to be printed off outside the time allowed for the testCandidates must not be prevented from doing so, however, they must be supervised at all timesConsider appointing an invigilator as a print monitor, collecting candidates’ printouts for them

Step 2 - Training - Access ArrangementsOrganise a training session for those who will be facilitating an access arrangement candidate

Photocopy and laminate the appropriate sections of the ‘pink’ booklet

Make sure that all those involved – invigilators, readers, scribes, prompters - understand the rules

Identify candidates with access arrangements on your centre timetable and on seating plans
