Supplemental Type Certificate (STC)

A supplemental type certificate (STC) is a type certificate (TC) issued when an applicant has received FAA approval to modify an aircraft from its original design. The STC,approves not only the modification but also how that modification affects the original design

STC EXAMPLES

Major AlterationThe FAA defines a Major Alteration as an alteration not listed in the aircraft, aircraft engine, or propeller specifications—

(1) That might appreciably affect weight, balance, structural strength, performance, powerplant operation, flight characteristics, or other qualities affecting airworthiness; or

(2) That is not done according to accepted practices or cannot be done by elementary operations.

Airworthiness Two conditions must be met before an aircraft can be considered “airworthy”:

1) The aircraft must conform to its type certificate (TC):Components installed are consistent with Drawings Specifications Other data from TC – STC and Field Approved alterations

2) The aircraft must be in condition for safe operation; this refers to the condition of the aircraft relative to wear and deterioration.
