Maintenances TypesPreventative

• Preventative maintenance reduces the probability of failures – they attempt to stop faults occurring. –Servicing (or flight servicing)–Scheduled Maintenance;–Condition based Maintenance; –Out of phase maintenance.

Aircraft Type Certificate• Given by the aeronautical authority

• Makes one aircraft design “airworthy”

• Airliners and owners must keep the maintenance requirements to maintain the airplane airworthiness

Aircraft Type CertificateWhat do we do with foreign aircraft?

Do check RAC part 9 and answer this

Aircraft Type Certificate

•Log into www.faa.gov• In “Top Requests” hit in “Type Certificate

Datasheets”•Pick one TCDS and present it within the

course•Determine the main items within

(performance, specifications)

Supplemental Type Certificate (STC)

A supplemental type certificate (STC) is a type certificate (TC) issued when an applicant has received FAA approval to modify an aircraft from its original design. The STC,approves not only the modification but also how that modification affects the original design

Page 11: Aircraft maintenance and manuals week 2

STC EXAMPLES

Major AlterationThe FAA defines a Major Alteration as an alteration not listed in the aircraft, aircraft engine, or propeller specifications—

(1) That might appreciably affect weight, balance, structural strength, performance, powerplant operation, flight characteristics, or other qualities affecting airworthiness; or

(2) That is not done according to accepted practices or cannot be done by elementary operations.

Airworthiness Two conditions must be met before an aircraft can be considered “airworthy”:

1) The aircraft must conform to its type certificate (TC):Components installed are consistent with Drawings Specifications Other data from TC – STC and Field Approved alterations

Page 17: Aircraft maintenance and manuals week 2

Airworthiness

2) The aircraft must be in condition for safe operation; this refers to the condition of the aircraft relative to wear and deterioration.

AIRWORTHY MEANS AN AIRCRAFT MEETS ITS TYPE DESIGN AND IS IN A CONDITION FOR SAFE OPERATION

Page 18: Aircraft maintenance and manuals week 2

Airworthiness DirectiveAirworthiness Directives (ADs) are legally enforceable rules issued by the Aeronautical Entity to correct an unsafe condition in a product (aircraft, aircraft engine, propeller, or appliance )Responsibilities  ( Type Certificate owner, aircraft owner/operator)Applicability and Compliance Content & Format Guidelines Incorporation by Reference Issuance and Publication Types of Airworthiness DirectivesAlternative Method of Compliance

Airworthiness Certificate An airworthiness certificate is an document which grants authorization to operate an aircraft in flight. (Given by Local Aeronautical Entity) Can be special or Standard Can be revoked

6. TERMS AND CONDITIONS• Unless sooner surrendered, suspended, revoked, or a termination date is otherwise established by the Administrator, • this airworthiness certificate is effective as long as the maintenance, preventive maintenance, and alterations are• performed in accordance with Parts 21, 43, and 91 of the Federal Aviation Regulations, as appropriate, and the aircraft• is registered in the United States.

Advisory Circular

Advisory Circulars are informational documents produced by the Federal Aviation Administration to inform and guide institutions, operations, and individuals within the aviation industry, as well as the general public. Advisory Circulars are intended to be informative in nature and not regulatory; however, many times they describe actions or advice that the FAA expects to be implemented or followed .
