We continue to thank parents for

their partnership with our school and

their involvement in their child’s

learning. Please do not hesitate to

speak to your child’s teacher if you

have any questions or concerns.

English

Writing – Our English units link in with our Science

topic , Ourselves and History topic, Toys from the

Past.

We will be:

Reading and writing our own instructions

Exploring and writing stories that relate to

our environment

Writing poetry about senses, using rhyming

couplets, this links to our Science topic

‘Senses’

Reading – During Guided Reading the children will

focus on:

Developing different reading strategies;

Improving their comprehension skills using

Reciprocal Reading to deepen understanding.

They will be taught to:

Provide evidence from the text;

Make sensible predictions;

Develop intonation

Summarise text.

Phonics – The children will be learning new phonemes

through daily phonics sessions. They will be blending

and segmenting sounds to help them in their reading

and writing. This year will be very important to your

child as their phonics will be checked at the end of

the school year.

Speak Up! - We are continuing to promote Standard

English in both speaking and writing.

Computing

Children will learn the importance of

E-Safety. They will learn the

important parts of a computer.

Science

For our first topic we will be learning about

‘Ourselves’. We will explore:

The human body

The five senses

The difference between living and non-

living things

For our second topic we will be learning about

‘Materials’. We will explore:

The names of different materials

The properties of different materials

These topics will enlighten your child. They will

provide them with the opportunity to explain

their reasoning.

Maths

In Maths we are currently teaching children

through ‘Maths No Problem’. In this programme

we teach children topics in breadth and depth.

We aim to master:

Counting

Addition and subtraction;

A range of problem solving opportunities.

Children must learn to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.

This will link to them learning their times tables

and their number bonds up to 20.

Art and design/Music

Art and design – We will design and make

our own puppets.

Music – We will be learning about music in

different cultures.

Geography

Geography - Our topic will be about ‘our local area’. Children

will be able to learn about the demographics and location of

Newham.

Children will be able to:

Improve their map reading skills.

Learn about how Newham has changed over time

This will be a very exciting topic for the children!

Home Learning

Homework is a continuation of school work at home and is a great

opportunity for your child to practice the skills they have learnt.

Reading – For the children to progress in their reading, they need to

read aloud daily. Please write a short comment in their reading log to

communicate to us how they are reading at home.

Children also benefit from being read to. Please try to find time each

day to read to your child.

Spellings - Weekly spellings should be practiced at home daily using the

Read, Write, Look, Cover, Check strategy.

English – Please check your child’s homework book. Homework will relate

to the unit of work for that week. We expect a high standard of writing,

the same as we would expect in a lesson.

Maths - Activities are given based on the unit of work taught that week.

Children also need to learn their 2, 5 and 10 times tables off by heart at

home. Also they need to learn their number bonds up to 20.

Speak Up! - A poem will be given to be learned off by heart at the

beginning of each half term. These will be performed in an assembly.

All classes will do P.E. twice a week.

Children should bring their kit in every

Monday and take it home on Friday to be

washed.

Please label all their items so they can

easily be identified and returned if lost.

R.E/PSHE

R.E. – The main theme of this half term is

‘Belonging’. The children will be able to

reflect on their religious and social groups. PSHE –This term the children will be

learning about ‘New Beginnings’. They will

focus on their social skills self-awareness

and developing skills of empathy towards one

another.

Educational Visits

This term we will visit the ‘Children’s Toy Museum’ where

children will get the opportunity to explore toys from the

past. They will be able to investigate vintage toys in a special

workshop. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children and

I am sure they will learn a lot from this visit!
