The 2017 Credit UnionAccess Plus Debit Cardpromotion came to an

end last December leaving 22credit union members a lothappier. These members won atotal of $750,000 in apromotion authorised by theBetting, Gaming and Lotteries

Commission that ran fromFebruary 2 to December 31.

Two winners were selectedeach month. These memberswho qualified for the prizebecause they used their debitcards six times or more eachmonth. Twenty of the memberswho won, from February toNovember, received $30,000

each while the two memberswho won in the month ofDecember took home $75,000each. The $75,000 was inrecognition of the 75thanniversary of the Credit UnionMovement.

December’s lucky memberswere Carolyn Gardner, amember of Manchester Credit

Union and Romaine Pearcefrom Public Sector EmployeesCredit Union.

The Jamaica Co-operativeCredit Union League organisedthe promotion on behalf of theCredit Union Movement.

1. Q: Can I send money from foreign tomy credit union account in Jamaica?

A: You can send money directly to yourcredit union account if it has that facility butthe money cannot be saved in foreigncurrency, just JA$ equivalent. Credit unionsdo not currently offer members FXaccounts. You can, however, save yourforeign exchange with the Credit UnionFund Management Company (CUFMC)through your credit union. Call CUFMC at926-7769.

2. Q: Can I access my credit unionaccount from overseas?

A: If your credit union offers an onlineservice, you should be able to access your

account from overseas. Go towww.creditunionsofjamaica.com and youwill find the contact informationfor your credit union.

3. Q: Do I have to be amember of the credit unionin order to get a loan?

A: Yes. You have to be amember to borrow from a credit union.That is one of the co-operativeprinciples that establish the differencebetween credit unions and otherfinancial institutions. Only people whoare members can do business withcredit unions.

4. Q: What are the requirements toopen a credit union account?

A:You will need to first of all find outhow much is the deposit for your permanent

shares. Then you will need a governmentID, proof of address, letter from employer(if employed), and one or two referencesfrom persons who are already members ofthe credit union.

5. Q: I am a member of a particularcredit union in Portland. Can I use any of

the credit unions in Kingston todo business?

A: Portland Co-operativeCredit Union does not havea branch office in Kingston.However, depending on theservice that you need, you

could speak with themanagement of Portland Credit

Union, and they would be able toarrange for another member creditunion to facilitate the service.
