EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION7 Habits of Highly Effective ProgramsCRA Conference 3/22/18Heather Cashwell, NCSU

WE’VE COME A LONG WAY

GOAL-BASED COMMUNICATION

To Increase Recovery

Challenges: significant amounts of materials left in HHs, falling recovery, public confusion

Solutions: economic messaging, beyond kitchen messaging, common suite messaging

To Increase Quality

Challenges: contamination rates, marketability of materials, public confusion

Solutions: direct and specific feedback to the individual, item-specific communication, enforcement, MRF/Market/Community relationship

INCREASED QUANTITY

Before bathroom bin 42% most/every time Why? Don’t know what’s recyclable and don’t have a bin

After bathroom bin 90% most/every time Why? Other members of HH still don’t recycle, need more bins

INCREASING QUALITY

THE NARRATIVE ON MARKETS FOR THE PUBLIC

THE NARRATIVE WITHIN YOUR ORGANIZATION

What happens when markets are not favorable? Is recycling seen as optional?

Educate yourself about markets, become BFFs with your MRF.

Plan better for downturns.

What is your story?
