Borehole Research, University of Leicester

Borehole Research is a focus for research using measurements in boreholes and onrecovered core. Researchers across the spectrum of geological subdisciplines cancontribute to these studies but our research falls in four main areas. 

Ocean Dri l l ing Program :  The Borehole Research Group plays a major role in the OceanDrilling Program Wireline Logging Contract. We are involved in the planning, acquisition,processing and interpretation of downhole measurements in connection with theexploration of the Earth's ocean crust. Our scientists sail as Logging Staff Scientists

onboard the drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution. Their research covers a very broad range ofthemes from ocean evolution to climate change. 

Petrophys ical Research:   Leicester is highly regarded by industry as one of a smallnumber of Universities specialising in petrophysical research. The petrophysical researchcentres on electrical measurements and their interpretation, both downhole and on core. Itcurrently includes geological interpretation of such measurements from the pore scale tothe field scale. 

Core-Log Integrat ion:  Development of techniques for the core location and reorientation,particularly applied to hard rock drilling; primarily using the DMT core-scanner optical and

downhole electrical images. The integration of core and log measurements to model crustalstructure, climate change and sea-level fluctuations. 

Leicester ODP Log Analysis faci l i ty:   Provision of log analysis facility for NERCsponsored researchers. Key facilities include Geoframe, IESX, Splicer and Saganpackages.

 Allied Research Interests include:Mineralogical and geochemical studies of mafic and felsic rocks as applied to modern andancient environments. Application of analytical techniques to problems in earth andenvironmental sciences and the minerals industry.

Petrophysical Properties of Crystalline Rocks

This two day meeting brought together researchers seeking to constrain the structure and transportproperties of crystalline rocks and explain the mechanisms by which they are modified over time. Themain objective was to present studies conducted at different scales: from microstructures through

boreholes to field studies, and to try and fill the gap between theoretical developments, field studies,laboratory experiments and numerical modelling.
