Recess News By Liam A and Dominic L
3/28/16
We picked to write about recess because we thought it was the best part of the day. There are many activities to choose from during recess. We wanted to show things that are fun to do even though students are not outside. These are some of the activities the 5th graders do.
At the classrooms
Mrs. Fauteux
In Mrs. Fauteux’s class a couple of people played games such as chess in the back. Others in the front of the class did go noodle. This is a game doing what the person on the screen (smart board) are doing to a song. People took turns picking the song.
Mr. McNiff
In Mr. McNiff’s class people used computers. Others just sat and talked. People also made up games and played games on white boards.
Hopefully tomorrow there will be outdoor recess!

The Pond By Olivia S
I stumble over tree roots. They stretch across the worn path like long, thick, fingers. A warm breeze sweeps through the forest, making the trees rustle. Soon, I see water. To my dismay, I have to leave the cool, shaded forest for a dry, hot beach. I remove my shoes and fling them on the sand along with my fishing rod. I run to the pond, and slowly wade in. The water feels refreshingly cold against me, so I go in deeper. Along the way, I startle a school of small fish. They flee away from my foot, making a donut shape. I swim for a while, gliding among the cool water.
After a good session of swimming, I waddle out. It seems even colder out of the water, which I welcome due to the 100 degree weather. I pick up my fishing rod, and settle myself under the giant oak tree that bordered the shore. I sit on one of its giant roots and cast my line. The water is ruffling up to the sun, sparkling in short, bright, blasts. I scoot my back up to the tree, and reel in my line once again. I cast it out, and admire the water once more.
The combination of the heat, and the steady lapping of the water must have made me doze off. The sun is considerably lower. I reel in my fishing line. Saying that the fish ate the bait was an understatement. Not a scrap of worm remained on the hook, which increased my guilt as I picture myself holding a bass with both hands, and throwing the massive fish back in the pond, watching the creature swim away silently. The water is no longer ruffling, but cascading from the center of the pond in neat circles. I wade in the shallows for a bit, and find the same school of fish. Out of curiosity, I place my foot in the middle of their group and once again they scatter in a donut shape. I find my shoes, and shake the sand out of them before I pull them on. “I wasted the day.” My conscience scolds. It was supposed to rain for the rest of the week, and the beach usually took about a couple of days to dry out. Shoes intact, and fishing rod in hand, I trek back through the path, tripping over tree roots.
Opinion Writing: Walk-‐A-‐Thon
Pluses and Negatives By Tyler C
I ran in this year’s school Walk-‐A-‐Thon at Ruggles Lane. I am in 5th grade so I like the idea of the Walk-‐A-‐Thon because you get all the money you raise for your Nature’s Classroom cost. Also you can go as fast you want. I liked it because you benefit 100%, unlike the other fundraisers when even the people that don’t do anything benefit, too.
The Walk-‐A-‐Thon also has some problems. I think the stamping is all wrong because you could get a stamp on top of another and you could lose a lap. Also people could be in front of you and you could lose a lap waiting in line to get a stamp. I hope they change these problems for next year.
Interview with Ms. Vincentsen By Larissa P and Andrea Z
We chose Ms. Vincentsen because she is the head of Ruggles Lane School. We wanted to learn more about our principal.
How many years have you been principal?
2 as an assistant, 7 as principal
What made you have the idea of being principal?
When I was a teacher I wanted to become a principal. I wanted to influence lots of kids.
What made you have the idea of choosing elementary school?
I worked in middle school as a teacher and administrator for 10 years and loved it! However, when an opportunity for a Principalship in the town's 3rd-5th grade school opened, I jumped at this new challenge. I love the energy and enthusiasm of an elementary school as well as watching children grow and learn through such formative years. The difference between kindergarten and 6th grade is amazing! Working at a K-6 school is wonderful because you also get to know families really well over the 7 years they are with you. I love elementary school and can't imagine moving to a different level!
What made you have the idea of being principal for Ruggles lane school?
I was working in Franklin and I was looking for a new opportunity. Ruggles Lane School was hiring! There were nice teachers and it felt like the best fit.
Could you tell us more about your life when you’re not in school?
I live in Southborough. I spend time with family, being outside, reading, and playing tennis.
What is your hobby?
Reading and tennis
What is your favorite book?
When I was younger, my favorite was Where the Red Fern Grows. As an adult, I love The Grapes of Wrath
What is your Favorite color?
Purple, Blue, Pink
THE FORCE AWAKENS
Directed by JJ Abrams
By Jadyn Kiley
When I first heard about the movie “The Force Awakens” I was pumped! But when I saw it I was kind of disappointed. After I was done watching it I thought too much action too little story line. There were also too many sacrifices of planets and people. Now here is what some of my friends think of the movie.
Harry -‐ Q. Did you like it? A. Yes it had too much action but overall it was good. Tyler-‐ Q. How did you like the movie? A. I thought it was good but the plot was confusing.
Harry-‐ Q .Did you like the main characters? A. I liked all of them except Kilo Ren (Harry has a grudge against Kilo Ren).
Harry-‐ Q. Would you watch it again? A. It depends if the fix it and make it less violent.
Tyler-‐ Q. Why does Harry not like Kilo Ren? A. Harry thinks Kilo Ren is annoying (authors comment) personally we have a group of star wars fanatics we all do not like Kilo Ren it is kind of a standard.
Harry-‐Q. Do you and Kilo have a history? A. (Angrily) yes of course we do.
Tyler-‐Q. Why do we only pick on Harry about him not liking Kilo Ren?
A. Because Harry claimed his title from time to time to time again. Sadly George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney for 4.05 billion dollars. There were a lot of upset people. Because of Disney’s reputation of princesses and weak story line but it was actually really violent. And lots like it but not our group; we banned Kilo Ren’s name. Last interview Mrs. Fauteux.
Q. Did you like the movie? A.I did. Q. Would you watch it again?
A. Absolutely. So in conclusion, not everybody agrees with us. :o
How to Make a Pillsbury Funfetti Cake From a Box By Sydney G
When you are make the cake you put the oven to 350 degrees. This is for 2 boxes. Then you start making the cake. First, you put in the mix, 2/3 cup of oil, 2 cups of water and, 6 eggs. You mix all of that in your bowl for 2 minutes. When you’re done, dump the batter into a greased pan you are using and put it in the oven for 30 minutes. Then, you take the cake out of the oven and let it cool of for about 5 minutes. After you let the cake cool off you start the frosting.
When you make a cake you need frosting. First you start with getting a bowl. Then you need 4 pounds of powdered sugar, a teaspoon of vanilla, 1 and ½ cups of butter, 2/3 cup of milk. Then you start mixing. You mix until it’s pretty thick. When you are done, you can start frosting your cake. That’s how you make a Pillsbury Funfetti cake.
How to: Shoot like Stephen Curry By: Aiden W and Kyle V
Introduction
Stephen Curry and his Golden State Warriors started dominating the NBA at the start of the 2014-‐2015 season. They then continued their destruction into to the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. They of course won the championship 4-‐2. That was their first NBA championship in 40 years. Now, in the 2015-‐2016 season, they broke the Chicago Bulls record of 72-‐10 wins in regular season by 73-‐9 with their dominate spirts leading the way. Not to mention, Steph Curry holds the all-‐time three pointers in a regular season with 402.
Their Roster included some of the best NBA players to ever play the game basketball including, Draymond Green, Shawn Livingston, Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes and the MVP, Steph Curry. Steph Curry is one of the best guards of all time. In that case, lots of people want to know how to shoot like him. Me and my friend Kyle have analyzed Steph’s shot and know we want to teach you.
Alignment
Steph Curry is a right handed shooter. Steph Curry keeps his shooting shoulder, elbow and hip aligned. Also, he keeps the ball above his shooting eye (right eye). He keeps his feet pointed slightly towards the left. Sometimes off the dribble, his feet are pointing towards the basket, so he turns left in the air the keep the alignment.
Stance
Steph is a wide stance shooter, meaning his feet are wide and his knees are bent inward.
The Dip
Off a catch, Steph dips the basketball low and uses the momentum to shoot. He usually dips the ball down to his waste before rising up to shoot. Off the dribble, he is almost always low so he doesn’t need to dip.
Palm Shooter
Steph is a palm shooter. To be a palm shooter means that he rests the ball on his entire hand, while also putting all the weight of the ball on his palm. As he releases, he transfers the ball from his palm to his finger pads and off finger tips as he snaps his wrist forwards.
Before Shot
When Steph is about to shoot the ball, it first travels backwards towards his head before the ball travels forwards towards the net.
Set point
Steph’s set point is just above his right eye and his thumb is lined up with his elbow with his palm facing the side. His arm makes a 90 degree angle at his arm pit. The angle between his arm and forearm is less than 90 degrees. He reaches his set point before he lifts his feet off the ground so he uses power from the jump to propel the ball forwards.
The Release
Steph’s release is 4 fingers down. The ball comes off his middle finger last. His wrist are relaxed and floppy.
The Follow Through
On Steph’s follow through, his elbow is right above his head, with his arm being straight. The ball travels in a straight line with his wrist above his right eye.
The Eyes
Steph’s keeps his eyes on the rim until the ball is released. He then follows the ball all the way to the rim.
Off Hand
Steph’s off hand (left hand) comes off the ball before snaps his wrist forward. He also tucks he thumb in.
Scavenger Hunt Results By: Grace & Olivia
This past month, some classes had the chance to participate in a scavenger hunt. They had to find things throughout the school, like the word Mulberry or a cash register. If they found all of the things, and in the right spaces, they got entered in a raffle where 6 participants would win a prize.
These are the items students had to find:
The American Revolution bulletin board Room 139 The word Mulberry Desktop Computer #19 1 Read to Succeed paper 3rd grade pick-‐up sign The word Nurse 1 cash register
The scavenger hunt was mostly for the kids in grades 2-‐3 to have fun, but hopefully, some of them visited parts of the school that they maybe haven’t visited before, or payed attention to random areas that they usually walk past.
The winners were: Branden (2C), Autumn (2C), Rhyan Orr (3C), Madeline (2F), Hannah (2C) and Aaron (2B).

Survey Says By Katherine M and Quinn T
Mrs. Fauteux’s WINN group’s favorite sports
Our group picked this survey because a lot of people like sports. We both play a variety of sports. Playing sports is a very common thing for kids and adults. It helps you stay active and fit.
According to the data soccer won with 7 votes. We think soccer won because both boys and girls play it. In football, mostly boys play. Basketball, gymnastics, and football came in second with 5 votes, baseball\softball came in third with 4 votes, and other came in last with 1 vote. Lacrosse and curling got no votes. We think that they got no votes because more adults play these sports than children and these are sports played by kids in high school more often.

Favorite candy
We surveyed Mrs. Foley’s 4th grade
We picked to survey about candy because we like a lot of different candy. And we know a lot of kids like many types of candy. Even adults like candy. When we surveyed, Mrs. Foley asked if teachers could vote.
The data we collected was surprising because we put black licorice as a joke because it leaves a weird taste and feeling in your mouth, but surprisingly 2 people chose it. We were also surprised about none picking skittles. We were surprised because skittles are one of our favorite candies and there are a variety of flavors. Warheads was the favorite candy. We were surprised that eight people picked it. It was surprising because war-‐heads are so sour.

Social Media By Jameson O
Have you been on social websites? Here are some famous and popular ones: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, and Instagram. All of these sites have many users, young and old, and all personalities. These sites are on many devices, like computers and phones. I like the people that are kind-hearted. And I play games on Facebook like King’s road. Anyway… some people post stuff like this:
Really… why this? Why try for popularity? These people post this for likes and followers. Why don’t they just post something normal, like a summary of your vacation and some pictures? Wow, you must have the dumbest brain. You say, but no… these are my opinions. But your opinions are yours, so no complaining. Anyway… let’s get on with it. Many people write comments like: “LOL never saw that coming!!!” to a ‘surprising RKO completions’ or something but I don’t care about those even though I watch them sometimes but I don’t really like them. They can be immature and dumb. I wish that people would be more kind-hearted and think about people that are younger than them when they post. It would make the internet a safer place.
Dr. Advice By Sydney G
Dear Dr. Advice,
My sisters won’t share their stuff with me and won’t let me play with them and their friends. What do I do?
From, Olivia
Dear Olivia,
When I was little my sisters did the same thing to me.
What I used to do was bribe them. If they don’t share say “If you don’t share with me I’ll do whatever you want for 1 week.”
When they don’t let you play with them I usually say “I’ll tell mom. Or tell dad.” Or “I’ll do whatever you want for 1 week.”
When they say I can’t play with them and their friends I usually bribe them like “I’ll clean your room for 2 weeks.” Or “I’ll do your chores for 2 weeks.” So some of these might not work for you but it usually does.
From, Dr. Advice

Dear Dr. Advice,
I got in a fight with my best friend because I was playing with my other best friend. I don’t know what to do. Please help me.
From, Larissa
Dear Larissa,
Well you can still play with both of them. Just introduce them to each other and see if they are nice to each other. Then you can play with both your friends without them fighting.
Then just do the same stuff you do with one and see if the other one likes then move on. If that doesn’t work you can alternate your time spent with each friend. That means one person gets Monday, the other gets Tuesday, and so on.
