NonprofitleadershipstudentsparticipatedintwoRegionalCaseStudyEventsduringthe2017-18academicyearwheretheyworkedasconsultantsandpresentedsolutionstoreal-worldchallengesposedbythehostorganizations.AtTheAkronZoo(Akron,OH)inOctober2017,12studentssolvedorganizationalchallengesrelatedtoincreasingcredibilityofzoosandaquariumsamongGenerationZandMillennials,bothlocallyandnationally,seasonalemployeerecruitment,andmemberrelations.InApril2018,11studentsworkedatTheMattressFactory,acontemporaryartmuseuminPittsburgh,PA,andofferedsolutionsrelatedtoincreasingattendanceandrevenueatavarietyofmuseumevents.

WCBADaretoCareDayAftera10-yearhiatus,theWCBAStudentLeadershipCouncil,inconjunctionwiththeCenterforNonprofitLeadership,planneda“DaretoCareDay”forstudents.Over50studentsparticipatedinthisuniquedayofservice.Studentsnotonlyservedourcommunityat6localnonprofitorganizations(AmericanRedCross,AnimalWelfareLeague,Boys&GirlsClubofYoungstown,JuniorAchievementofMahoningValley,Inc.,TheRichCenterforAutism,andtheYoungstownPlayhouse),butlearnedaboutcareeropportunitiesinthenonprofitsector.

CenterInternsTheCenterforNonprofitLeadershipworksinconjunctionwiththeWCBACenterforCareerManagementtorecruitandplaceinternsinnonprofitorganizations(local,regional,national,andinternational).ThefollowingstudentsearnedacademiccreditfortheirinternshipinthenonprofitsectorthroughtheBUS4841course.

PayItForward:StudentPhilanthropyInitiativeYoungstownStateUniversitystudentsintheStudentNonprofitLeadershipOrganizationgainedhands-onexperienceinphilanthropythisspringthroughthePayItForward:StudentPhilanthropyInitiativebyawarding$3,000infundingtoTheBoys&GirlsClubofYoungstownforaSummerCampFitchExperienceformembers.

TheBoys&GirlsClubofYoungstown(BGCY),incollaborationwiththeYMCAofYoungstown,willusethesefundstosendapproximately30deservingmemberstospend3daysand2nightsatCampFitchonthebeautifulshoresofLakeErieinPennsylvania.TheBGCY10-weeksummerprogrambeginsinJuneandendsinAugust.Thistripwilloccurattheconclusionofsummerandpriortothestartofschool.TheClub’sstaffwillevaluatethebehaviorandattendanceofthemembersage10+throughouttheentiresummerprogramtodeterminewhichmembersaremostdeservingofthisexposuretrip.

ThePayItForwardInitiativehelpsstudentslearnhowtobeengagedcitizensandtounderstandtheimportantrolephilanthropyplaysinthehealthofourlocalcommunities.TheinitiativeaddressescriticaleconomicneedsintheMahoningValleywhileprovidinganopportunityforstudentstoexperiencethegrantprocessofsoliciting,reviewing,interviewing,andawardingfunding.

Throughademocraticprocess,thestudentsreviewedapplicationsfromnearly30localnonprofitorganizationsthatmetspecificguidelinesrelatedtoaddiction,animalwelfare,neighborhoodrevitalization,andyoutheducation.

This initiative began with seed money from Ohio Campus Compact in 2010, and the students have sustained this initiative through their own fundraising efforts every year since then. In total, participating students have awarded nearly $50,000 to local nonprofit organizations through this initiative.

KristenDaygraduatedinMay2018earningaB.S.B.AwithamajorinAdvertising/PublicRelationsandminorsinInternationalBusinessandNonprofitLeadershipfromtheWilliamsonCollegeofBusinessAdministration.Duringhersenioryear,KristeninternedatPlayhouseSquareinCleveland,whichthenturnedintoafull-timepositionasMarketingCoordinator.Withinthisrole,KristenworkswiththetouringBroadwayshowsonadvertisingcampaignsandpressopportunities.Sheattributesthissuccesstohermarketinginternshipduringthesummer2017asoneoftheRaymondJohnWeanFoundation’sSummerHonorsInternsatNortheastOhioAdoptionServices(NOAS).Additionally,shewasinvolvedintheStudentNonprofitLeadershipOrganization(SNLO)for2.5years,servingasSecretaryandthenasVicePresident.

AmandaIrwingraduatedinDecember2017earningaB.S.B.A.withamajorinMarketingManagementandaminorinNonprofitLeadership.Amandaheldtwointernshippositions:onewithHomesforKidsInc./ChildandFamilySolutionsastheMarketing&DevelopmentInterninthesummerof2016andasecondwiththeMahoningCountyLandBank.Thispositionstartedinthesummerof2017throughtheNonprofitLeadershipSummerHonorsInternshipProgram,fundedbyTheRaymondJohnWeanFoundation,andcontinuedthroughFall2017.Upongraduation,AmandalandedapositionastheAssistantDirectorofthe

AnnualFundintheOfficeofInstitutionalAdvancementatManorCollegeintheGreaterPhiladelphiaArea.Herroleconsistsofplanningandexecutingfundraisingcampaignsfortheinstitution'sannualfund,donorstewardshipefforts,andconstituentinformationanddatamanagement.

RaeMcCanngraduatedSummaCumLaudeinAugust2018earningaB.S.A.S.inHospitalityManagementwithminorsinEmployeeRelationsandNonprofitLeadership.Raeworkedpart-timeatStambaughAuditoriumasastudentfor3yearsandwillcontinuefull-timeaftergraduation.Shehasheldthepositiontitlesofeventassistantandvolunteercoordinator.Shealsocompletedaninternshipasaproductiontechnician,whichinvolvedequipmentset-upforeventssuchasfundraisersandconcerts.RaeplanstopursueaMastersinMuseologytoeventuallybecomeaGuestServiceandProgrammingDirector
