Meaning

The term assignment is used in educational procedures is generally taken to refer to that of the teaching activity where the teacher gives (assigns) a project, a problem, a reading test, ect.

Definition

The assignment applies to the part of instructional activity devoted to the clear recognition and acceptance by the pupil of the next unit of learning to take place and of the processes by which learning may be achieved most effectively.

Criteria for a good assignment

• Sufficiently challenging to stimulate interest.

• Definite, clear, interesting.• Related to the topic.• Should appeal to public curiosity.• Should be flexible.

Principles of assignment planning

• Correlate with previous knowledge and experience.

• Motivate the students.

• Relate to purpose.

• Challenging but not threaten.

• Cooperatively made.

• Provides for individual difference.

Guidelines for preparing assignments

• Teacher has to suggest referred book while giving assignment.

• The assignment should preferably arise out of the activities, need and interest of the student.

• It must motivate, remove doubts or misunderstandings and develop insight.

• The task of assignments should be clear to the point.

• The assignment should be a co-operative activity in teaching.

• Weekly assignments are preferable to daily or monthly over.

Types of assignments

• Preparatory assignment for next day works the pupil has to prepare from today itself.

• Study assignment can range from a page or paragraph to a chapter, topic, pattern, project exercise teacher will guide the students in the problem.

• Revision assignment given for checking the understanding of topic.

• Remedial assignments purpose is to clear misunderstandings and to remove week points.

• Common assignments are used as a means of basic learning.

• Individual assignment are different and distinct for each person and educational problem.

Methods of assignments in patient care

1. Functional method: In this method nurses are assigned specific functions such as administering medications, taking vitals or providing general nursing are to a group of patients.

2. Case method: In this method nurse is expected to provide complete nursing care to the patient.

3. Team method:

It is came in to existence because of non availability of sufficient professional qualified nurses to provide nursing care to the patients in the hospital.

The main purpose is to provide best possible nursing care to the patient.

4. Primary care: In this type nurse is assigned the responsibility for the care of each patient from time the patient is admitted to the hospital till the patient is discharge.
