Starch potatoes are grown on 250.000 hectares producing 10
million tons of starch potatoes
About 80% of the worlds potato starch is produced in the EU (predominantly in Germany, The Netherlands, France,
Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Austria)
-
In conventional potatoes, starch is a mixture of
amylose and amylopectine

The amylopectin potato

Most industrial applications require
purification of amylopectin

Both components are polymers of glucose units

Double helices
packed in semi-
crystalline arrays
in amyloplasts
-
For many industrial applications, only the
thickening amylopectin is required
-
To eliminate amylose, the gene encoding the granule bound starch synthase
(GBSS) has been silenced by antisense technology

- Thickening without gelling
-Low impurities
Compared to starches derived from conventional potatoes or from cereals,
Amflora starch offers many improved properties

arrende, coltiver negli USA
mercato. Quindi ci concentreremo sugli interessanti mercati del nord e sud
America e sui mercati emergenti dellAsia

Amylopectin potato obtained by breeding is allowed
Applied EMS mutagenesis to find mutations in the waxy gene, encoding granule- bound
starch synthase enzyme (GBSS).
This was used to establish elite
breeding lineages lacking granule-
bound starch synthase I protein
activity and producing high-
amylopectin starch.
The most promising loss-of-function
allele (waxy E1100) carried a
mutation in the 5 -splice donor site of intron 1 that caused mis-splicing
and protein truncation.
