Purpose Purpose R&D PROGRAMR&D PROGRAM
• Investigate issues and challenges to assist the services in implementing ADL solutions– Right Training, Right Time, Right Way
• Add to the “bag of tools” ADL designers and developers need– Concrete examples– Lessons Learned– Emerging techniques and technologies
3
Changes from the PastChanges from the Past
• Bigger investment – more directed prototypes
• ADL exemplars
• Data to support decision making
• Greater experience and knowledge of ADL techniques & technologies
• Emphasis on ADL R&D
4
Focus on QualityFocus on Quality
• Emphasizing the “A” and the “L” in ADL– Melding technology and learning together
• Exploring effective techniques, methodologies, and technologies.
• Content and applications that:– Improve performance – Support reuse & interoperability– Are: instructionally sound, interactive, engaging, &
motivating

Introduction to the Civil Support Team Trainer (CSTT)Introduction to the Civil Support Team Trainer (CSTT)
“SAMPLING IS A KEY STEP IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE PRESENCE OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS SUSPECTED OF CONTAINING CHEMICAL OR
BIOLOGICAL AGENTS.”
“SAMPLING IS THE PHYSICAL PROCESS OF EXTRACTING PHYSICAL MATTER FROM THE INCIDENT SITE SO THAT IT MAY BE ANALYZED AND
TESTED TO DETERMINE ITS COMPOSITION.”
“ON THE SAMPLING MISSION, THE ENTRY TEAM WILL EXTRACT THREE SAMPLES WITH THE AIM OF DETECTING AND IDENTIFYING THE CAUSE
AND NATURE OF THE HAZARD.”
“IN ORDER TO ENSURE SAMPLES ARE ACCURATE AND VIABLE, EVERY EFFORT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT SAMPLES ARE NOT
CROSS CONTAMINATED.”
“WE WILL NEED TO WORK AS A TEAM HERE. THE ACTIONS FROM ONE PERSON CAN EFFECT THE INTEGRITY OF THE ENTIRE SAMPLING
OPERATION. YOU CAN STAY HERE AND PRACTICE THE PROCEDURE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE…..”

HLA/SCORM Prototype HLA/SCORM Prototype
Partnership between DOD and industry to investigate integration of simulations into ADL based instruction to enhance learning.
Areas of investigation:
- Ability to exchange data between SCORM based instruction and HLA based simulations- Ability to capture simulation data for future use- Implications on current standards- Potential benefits to individual & collaborative learning
15
Tablet PC Prototype Tablet PC Prototype Partnership with Brown University to conduct research into the use of Tablet PCs in support of small group collaboration. (In conjunction with Microsoft and the National Science Foundation).
Areas of investigation:
- Sharing information between Tablet PCs- Document and note retrieval- User interface implementation issues- Benefits using this technology in support of collaborative learning
To be demonstrated at I/ITSEC 2003
