The Biggest

Christmas Tree in the ~orth

Repnnted from Evem,,' TeJelram, St. John',

~Happy Valley Is II town of about 4()()() inhabitants, situated some six

miles from the great Air Force Base at Goose Bay. The greater num

ber of the townspeople are not native sons and daughters of Labrador

but are 8ert/enJ in a new land. They COl7le from all parts of the Dominion 01

Canada, from our own Province of Newfoundland and from across the

mainland to the western shores of our great country. But they a/so came

from other lands, from the U.S.A., from aU over Europe and from the ends

of the earth.

Happy VaIJey has grown rapidly, Its population mc.reaS'.'"A by Sbout~

100 percent over the past three or four yeau. It 15 not surpnsmg

therefore that this is not a who/ly integrated commumty, and that

he who .sit in office a town manaAer i.s faced with many problems arisin~

not only from a rapidly Arowin~ town, but al!tO from a cosmopolitan popu

lation.

At Chrisma.s time men alwaylt draw closer toAether and strive to

A make life a little pleasanter for their fel/ows . ... For some weeks be

¥ fore Christrnas(J960) the larAe open space in the center of town . ..

was blanketed by several inches of virAin snow. Then, one morninA, foot

pr;ntlt marred the white blanket and a larAe hole had been duA riAht in the

centre of the plot. Suddenly there appeared rol/inA onto the lot, a thirty

ton mobile crane, which wa.s fol/owed by a flatbed trailer truck carryinA a

huAe Christmas tree. Watchers.saw the crane hoist the tree;n theair, SWlnA

it around, placinA it accurately in the hole. A lew minutelt later the ArNt

machines moved oR leavinA behind them the biAAe!ft Christmas tree in

the North, lttandinA secure and /irm in the centre of the town square. This

feat had been accomplished with the co-operation of the superintendent

of the Pitts-Drake Construction Company ba!'.ed at Happy Valley.

During the next few days, town employees erected a !'.caffold around~

the 34-foot tree and it was decorated with 369 coloured lights. The

Town Office had indeed created a wonderful spectacle for its citizens.

~But this was not the final effort. At the town boundary, a huge il

luminated Christmas arch 42 feet wide and 16 feet high greeted all

who entered the town. It was on December 20th that the excitement

reached its peak. The tree was illuminated with its many colored lights and

in the evening some 1500 citizens and children gathered around the tree or

lined the road leading to the tree, along which it has been reported Father

Christmas would travel for a pre-Christmas visit to our township.

With eager faces the children gazed along the road . .. It was a cold~

night and some of the parents wished Santa would hurry up but

the cold bothered the children not at all. .. Then suddenly Santa

himself appeared, riding on the front of the town snow plough. .. He an

nounced that he had just arrived from Thule on a short pre-Christmas tour.

The children swarmed around him now, and Santa could scarcely move his

arms to hand out gifts to the expectant youngsters. One little fellow said,

"He looked like my uncle but it couldn't have been my uncle because he

asked me my name and my uncle knows my name, so I guess it must have

been really Santa Claus."

~After a thousand gifts had been distributed, a weary Santa was al

lowed to move away and the children, warm with excitement,

wended their way home. Someone remarked that Mose Dyson made

a very fine Santa Claus but the children knew that it was Santa himself, no

matter what the sophisticates might say.

The citizens of Happy Valley are grateful to their town manager, and~

to the very generous business men who made the gifts and decora-

tions possible, and to the citizens who worked together to make

Christmas of 1960 in Happy Valley, bright and memorable.
