America’s Next Top Model

The first cycle of America’s next top model premiered on May 20, 2003 and aired 9 episodes.

Since then, 150 episodes have been shown leading to 13 cycles.

Tyra Banks created the show in order to help girls begin their modeling careers.

Today it is shown on the CW on Wednesday nights from 8-10 p.m.

The purpose of the show is to transform women into fierce supermodels.

Each year fourteen participants live together to compete to become America’s Next Top Model.

They are filmed during all hours of the day and are pressured to always look top notch.

During the season, the women need to demonstrate their “inner” and outer beauty.

They learn how to catwalk and take beautiful photos.

Intended Audience

The intended audience for the show is teenage girls.

It makes them believe they have to look a certain way in order to be beautiful

The show illustrates what is in style and what they should look like in order to fit in.

Most teenage girls watch MTV and VH1, where next top model marathons are shown.

Commercials

During the show, most of the commercials shown are beauty products– Make up– Razors/shaving cream– Hair products– Perfumes– Clothes– Facial cleansers

The commercials put an emphasis on beauty. The make-up industry tells women everyday that their products help to achieve the “beautiful” look. This leads women to believe that they have to wear make-up in order to be beautiful.

Theses commercials combined with the show can change a persons opinion. It can also make a woman strive to achieve the conventional beauty.

Feminist Lens

The girls in the show feel like they have to beautiful and be able to take pretty pictures in order to be successful.

The girls feel that they have to be living up to a standard of how pretty they are. If they are not up to that standard, they will not win the competition.

The girls have to just show there beauty and sub-beauty & you don’t have to be very intelligent.

Also it show to men how they are just objects and looks too so really nothing else matter to them.
