The 3.6Reminder

t was 4:31 a.m. on Jan. 19, 1994

when Mother Nature hammered

Southern California. The quake

registered 6.7 on the Richter

Scale and caused more than 5,000 in-

juries, 57 deaths and damage in ex-

cess of $20 billion.

When the quake hit that morning, I

was only about five miles from the epi-

center. The shaking was so immedi-

ately powerful that I thought for sure

this was the “big one” the scientists

has been talking about for years. In the

darkness, I waited for the apartment to

collapse.

The recent 3.6 earthquake that jolted

northern Los Angeles County served as

a reminder of the devastating power that

Mother Nature has. Fortunately, in this re-

cent temblor, the quake didn’t build.

I

While reviewing

earthquake data af-

terward I discovered

that L.A. County had

been hit by more

than 50 temblors in

the span of about 14

days. Granted, most

were too small to be

felt, but that data

serves as a reminder

that we need to be

prepared in Southern

California, as do you, regardless of where

you live.

In this inaugural Buyer’s Guide, we

have compiled the products you need to

be prepared for the type of emergency

you may encounter. In the following

pages, you’ll read about tents, food and

jackets, boots and more. We have com-

We know how critical it is to be pre-

pared. In Southern California, the San

Andreas Fault runs some 800 miles

through the state, including near Los

Angeles. Scientists say this fault has the

power to unleash a quake of more than

8 on the Richter Scale, and it’s overdue.
