American Airlines will from Febru-ary 10 begin selling basic economy fares in addition to the other main cabin fares currently offered. The U.S. airline said these no-frills tick-ets would provide a simple and af-fordable way to experience Ameri-can’s network, and provide customers the option to pay for the services they want.

The idea stems from the low cost model that has seen budget operators gain increasing market share against many full service carriers, globally. However, not every American Air-lines flight will offer basic economy fares, the airline stressed.

“American Airlines now has some-

thing to offer every customer, from those who want simple, low-price travel to those who want an ultra-premium experience via First Class,” said American Airlines Pres-ident Robert Isom. “Importantly, this new fare product also gives

American the ability to compete more effectively with the growing number of ultra-low-cost carriers.”

Multiple disclosures will spell out the attributes of a basic economy ticket at the time of purchase on aa.com, and when utilising the air-line’s reservations phone centres

or when booking through a travel agent or online travel site. In ad-dition to clear disclosures at the time of purchase, the airline fur-ther said basic economy passen-gers will also receive reminders as their travel day gets closer, includ-

ing at check-in kiosks at the airport.

“Our goal is to make sure that all customers have the op-

portunity to purchase a ticket on American that works for their spe-cific needs,” continued Isom. “We will work hard to ensure transpar-ency, provide clear explanations of these fares, and we look forward to continuing to offer a wide vari-ety of services to our customers.”

Second phase of GE9X CMC component testing in GEnx demonstrator engine is complete

The second phase of GE9X CMC (ceramic ma-trix composite) component testing in a GEnx demonstrator engine is complete. The dem-onstrator engine accumulated 1,800 cycles in the latest round of tests, which included ex-posure to harsh environmental conditions of dust and debris. The level of debris exposure was equivalent to about 3,000 take-off and landing operation cycles. The GE9X engine will power Boeing’s 777X aircraft. According to Ted Ingling, GE9X general manager at GE Aviation, “Dust and debris accumulate on the external surface of the airfoils can degrade the insulation coatings. They can also col-lect on internal cooling circuits of the blades and nozzles and degrade the cooling effec-tiveness. Both factors can lead to durability

issues. These demonstrator tests allow us to get an accelerated understanding of how our new designs and materials perform in all environments, including those prone to high airborne debris.” For the second round of tests, the GEnx demonstrator engine utilized the same CMC combustor liners, HPT stage 1 shrouds and HPT stage 2 nozzles from the first round of tests in September 2015 along with the addition of the HPT stage 1 CMC nozzles.

UTC Aerospace Systems is changing the industry with its lightest ice protection systems

UTC Aerospace Systems, a unit of United Tech-nologies, has obtained an exclusive license from Metis Design for carbon nanotube (CNT) heater-based technology, for aircraft electro-thermal ice protection. This technology was co-developed by Metis Design and the Depart-ment of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The technology supports the aerospace industry’s growing need for more durable, lightweight, damage-tolerant and low-power ice protection systems. Aircraft ice protection systems remove or prevent ice from accumulating on the leading edges of wings, stabilizers, and engine nacelles. Once implemented on aircraft, UTC Aerospace Systems’ electrothermal ice protection systems with CNT technology will deliver uniform heat distribution, enhanced damage tolerance, and improved fatigue resistance in a lightweight system. UTC Aerospace Systems’ Sensors & In-tegrated Systems business is a leading supplier of pneumatic de-icing, ice detection and elec-trothermal ice protection, with a presence on hundreds of aircraft types. The use of electro-thermal ice protection systems is expected to grow as new aircraft become “more electric,” which will result in a shift away from energy-inefficient bleed air systems. Products built with CNT enable the use of lightweight heaters, have lower thermal inertia ,and increased dam-age tolerance, compared to traditional electro-thermal systems.

Vector Aerospace signs Rolls-Royce T56 support contract with major Euro-pean government

Vector Aerospace has signed a contract with a major European government for the over-haul of Rolls-Royce T56 turboprop engines. The contract, which has a multi-year term, covers the overhaul of T56 engines, modules, components and accessories. The Rolls-Royce T56/501-D engine is installed on a variety of aircraft, including Lockheed Martin’s C 130/L-100 Hercules transport family and P-3 Orion anti-submarine warfare platform, as well as Northrop Grumman’s E-2 Hawkeye early warning aircraft.

United Airlines reports full-year and fourth-quarter 2016 performance

For the fourth quarter of 2016, total revenue was US$9.1bn, an increase of 0.2% year-over-year. Fourth-quarter 2016 consolidated pas-senger revenue per available seat mile (PR-ASM) decreased 1.6% and consolidated yield decreased 1.2% compared to the fourth quar-ter of 2015. This outperformance versus the company’s initial guidance was due to strong-er close-in bookings and yields in November and December. For the full-year 2016, consoli-dated PRASM declined 5.4% compared to the prior year driven by factors including a strong U.S. dollar, lower surcharges, reductions from energy-related corporate travel, and declining yields. Total operating expense was US$8.0bn in the fourth quarter, up 1.2% year-over-year. Excluding special charges, total operating ex-pense was US$8.1bn, a 3.2% increase year-over-year. Consolidated unit cost (CASM) de-creased 0.8% compared to the fourth quarter of 2015, due mainly to lower fuel expense. Fourth-quarter consolidated CASM, excluding special charges, third-party business expens-es, fuel and profit sharing, increased 4.1% year-over-year, driven largely by the impact of labor agreements ratified in 2016. For the full year, consolidated CASM decreased 2.9% compared to full-year 2015 due to lower fuel expense. Excluding special charges, third-par-ty business expenses, fuel and profit sharing, consolidated CASM increased 2.8% compared to the prior year, due primarily to new labor agreements.

Safran and Zodiac Aerospace, a new global leader in aerospace

Safran, an international high-technology group and tier-1 supplier of engines, sys-tems and equipment in its core markets of Aerospace, Defense and Security, and Zodiac Aerospace a global leader in Aerosafety, Air-craft systems, Seats and Cabins, have entered into exclusive negotiations for an acquisition of Zodiac Aerospace by Safran through an agreed public offer of €29.47 per share and a subsequent merger on the basis of 0.485 Sa-fran shares for one Zodiac Aerospace share. Prior to and conditional upon the merger, Safran would distribute a special dividend of €5.50 per share to its existing shareholders. The transaction would create a global leader in aircraft equipment, allying the market lead-ing positions, expertise, technologies and talents of both Safran and Zodiac Aerospace. The new entity would combine Safran’s ca-pabilities in landing gear, wheels and brakes,

nacelles, power systems, actuation and avion-ics, with Zodiac Aerospace’s leading positions in seats, cabin interiors, power distribution, lighting, fuel, oxygen and fluid systems and safety equipment. In electrical systems, Zo-diac Aerospace’s assets would reinforce Sa-fran’s portfolio of technologies and position the group ideally for future developments to-wards the “more electrical aircraft”. On a pro forma basis, including Safran’s world-leading propulsion business, the combined group would have around 92,000 employees (includ-ing more than 45,000 in France), c. €21.2bn in adjusted revenues and c. €2.7bn in adjusted recurring operating income. On this basis the combined group would form the third-largest player worldwide in the aerospace sector. The combined group would become the second-

largest player worldwide in aircraft equip-ment with pro forma revenues in these busi-nesses of c. €10bn. It would be present in over 60 countries.
