Message from Rabbi Nico … As we begin a new secular year, we thought you may find meaning in this D’var Torah
shared by Rabbi Nico on his blog, PO VESHAM (www.povesham.org) Parashat Bo will be read in congregations around the world on January 12, 2019
“OUTSIDE OR INSIDE? PARASHAT BO: BEING A JEW EVERYWHERE!
If you want to learn about the essence of the Jewish People, you should consider reading Parashat Bo.
Two characteristics in defining something can be: 1. Limits – What is inside and what is outside! 2. How do you connect it with “others?”
In this Torah portion we learn about the mitzvah (the commandment) of Mezuzah, which here comes in the context of “Passover” as a symbol for our houses to be skipped by the terrible plagues that whipped Egypt.
The Mezuzah symbolizes a “Limit”, the delineation between what is inside and what is outside. The virtual boundary to the way you define your home, your values, practices, members, etc. The Mezuzah is also your message to the outside: Hey there! I’m a Jew! What initially was a symbol of physical protection today is an invitation to spiritual integrity. So what about what’s going on “there” – outside!? Let’s start that with the origins… The mezuzah symbolizes an inner definition but not external disconnection; we learn this from the Passover Seder itself, where we remember the plagues OUTSIDE, those which the Egyptians suffered, and we symbolically remove from our cup a drop of wine for each plague using a fingertip. The sages explain that one cannot be completely joyous when some of God’s creatures had to suffer. This is a later tradition; however the parasha itself has another thing that frames the connection with “the other:” There shall be one law for the native and for the stranger who resides in your midst. תורה אחת יהיהר הגר בתוככם (Exodus 12:49) לאזרח ולג This means that there is no room for double ethics in Judaism; we are committed by law to respect the other, recognizing his different identity, with the same value and parameters we think about ourselves. The same Mezuzah – Torah which obligates the interior, also obligates us toward the exterior… This is may be the balance and the connection between Tikkun Atzmi (the reparation of yourself) and Tikkun olam (the reparation of the world). It’s when based on knowing well who we are we meet others with sensitivity, empathy and love. Why? Because our law - Torah according to the Jewish tradition is a divine gift! When Hillel Hazaken (the elder) was asked to synthesize the whole Torah in one sentence he said: ‘That which is hateful unto you do not do to your neighbour. This is the whole of the Torah, The rest is commentary. Go forth and study.’ (Shabbat 31a). May we find in the words of Torah a source of power to define and build our homes and a bridge of love and empathy to connect and respect others.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Lauren Simon, TBT President
Last month, I was invited by Donald Trump to attend the White House Hanukkah Party. I decided to bring my dad, Alan Gottlieb, with me. Not only was this a once in a lifetime opportunity, I also thought it was a chance for a fun father/daughter trip.
Almost every time I mentioned this trip to people,
I got very mixed, but extreme reactions. Some were completely appalled and expressed their extreme dislike of my choice to attend this event. The other half was very excited and jealous.
Aside from personal politics, these polar reactions
were upsetting. Again, having nothing to do with politics, I think we, as human beings, often struggle to be happy for other people. We form an opinion and make a decision without actually listening to the other person. Listening is an active process and if you are formulating a response, you are not listening.
My father and I had an amazing time. The
experience at the White House was unlike any other. It was beautiful, it was fun and most of all, it was inspiring. Inspiring because there is something powerful about being in a room with 200 fellow Jews celebrating a miracle.
I hope you all had a great end to 2018 and are
starting off 2019 with a Bang!! Remember, when making all those resolutions, that being an active and engaged listener is an important goal for all of us. Happy New Year!
Although he’s not smiling, I promise he’s enjoying himself.

OUR TBT MENORAH RESTORED & REDEDICATED
By Elaine Asa The story behind this beautiful menorah that has been a part of Temple Beth Tikvah for many years is a very special story that I would like to share with all of you, most of whom were not here when it was dedicated. An amazing artist by the name of Helen Burke was a non-Jewish artist in residence for many years at Camp Swig, the Jewish reform camp now known as Camp Newman, when the camp was located at Saratoga California. Many of our youth, my children among them, spent many
summers at Camp Swig and many of them were mentored by Helen Burke and her workshops with campers during the summer months. Helen had done research on Jewish art, Judaism and the Holocaust, and produced many beautiful works of art with the campers as well as individual pieces of Jewish art that she created. Camp Swig moved from Saratoga to Napa in northern California a number of years ago and many of Helen’s art pieces were moved to the new camp; but unfortunately due to the terrible fire at Camp Newman all of Helen’s art pieces except one made it out alive. We at Temple Beth Tikvah are probably the only synagogue that has most of Helen’s work left at one institution even though many pieces have found homes among the Jewish campers throughout the world that she influenced. One year we invited Helen to come to TBT and bring her beautiful art pieces which have been part of our bimah. Different TBT families donated her art in memory or in honor of loved ones. And this evening we are privileged to have one of those families with us. Janice Peddie, whose children also were campers at Camp Swig, donated this beautiful menorah in memory of her husband who died at a very young age and she wanted to honor his memory by donating this beautiful menorah. Many years have passed since the menorah was donated, but tonight we are honored to have Janice, who believe it or not will be turning 90 later this month, and her son Jeff and his wife and children to be here to
rededicate the menorah, once again remembering Wilfred Peddie, their husband and father. This refurbishing and rededication of the menorah would not have been possible without Lou Ann Taback, whose daughters, Dori and Robin (of blessed memory) were impacted by Helen during their years at Camp Swig. Lou Ann realized that the menorah and many of Helen’s art pieces were in desperate need of cleaning and upgrading and so she found an antique restorer to do the work that needed to be done. It turned out that Lou Ann’s daughter, Dori, was visiting from Israel and had worked with Helen at Camp Swig and knew the technique that needed to be done to properly restore the menorah as you see it tonight. Lou Ann reached out to Janice Peddie and family to see if they were willing to participate once again in honoring their husband and father. Their answer was “yes” and what better time to rededicate the menorah than Chanukah? And so, many thanks to the Peddie family and many thanks to Lou Ann and Dori.

While short-term programs often effect changes in knowledge or attitudes, it is rare for a program to change behaviors. The L’Taken seminar accomplishes both.

What PROFESSIONALS are saying:
The weekend was life changing…The things that I learned and the people I have met made me feel a stronger connection to my Judaism and my community.
- Lizzie Leeds, Temple Judea, Coral Gables, FL
What TEENS are saying:
L’TakenSOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINAR
Join us in Washington, D.C. for a fun andmeaningful weekend with teens from coast-to-coast and learn about the Jewish imperative for justice and the Reform Movement’s advocacy positions on critical public policy issues.
Students spend the weekend learning about major social justice issues and the Jewish values that inform the Reform Movement’s advocacy, culminating on Monday when everyone heads to Capitol Hill to lobby their representatives in Congress on an issue of their choice.
This program provided meaningful opportunities for hands-on learning, igniting curiosity, building life-long friendships, being part of something bigger and discovering one’s own voice. Each of our children came back energized, excited and proud, having grown in immeasurable ways over those few days at L’Taken.
- Susan Steinbrink, Leslie Weiss, Michelle Landau and Sharon Kollender; parents of David, Sarah, Annie and Ellie; Beth Or Congregation, Maple Glen, PA
The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism is the Washington office of the Union for Reform Judaism, whose nearly 900 congregations across North America encompass 1.5 million Reform Jews, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, whose membership includes more than 2,000 Reform rabbis. Visit rac.org for more.
What PARENTS are saying:
L’Taken was perhaps the best investment we’ve made to date: how do I write about a program that may have single-handedly both locked in our daughter’s career path and turned the final key in guaranteeing her active involvement as a Jewish adult?

SECURITY AT THE TEMPLE by Steve Belasco, VP Operations
The administration of Temple Beth Tikvah takes quite seriously the several recent highly publicized violent acts against other Jewish communities in the US and the possibility that it could happen here. While the work being done to keep our congregation safe and secure has always been accomplished behind the scenes, we have heightened our concern about the safety of our congregants and facility and have been taking actions to keep everyone safe. So … what is TBT really doing to improve our security? First permit me to point out the obvious. Unlike, for example, Temple Beth Sholom, Temple Bat Yahm, or University Synagogue, our facility is not located on a major thoroughfare with easy escape access to freeways nor do we have multiple, widely separated entrances and exits to our property. We “live” in a quiet residential neighborhood with access to Tikvah Terrace (the primary path to our offices and sanctuary) through the relatively narrow and lightly trafficked Acacia Avenue. These facts alone reduce the threat level we face at Temple Beth Tikvah. In order to provide the congregation with the best advice on this topic we can find, we are reaching out to the governmental professionals in this field whose job it is to keep us all safe and who would respond if we had a problem. On December 11, Cindy Jacobson attended a symposium at the ADL offices in Newport Beach. This program, attended by representatives from most of the synagogues in Orange County, Heritage Pointe, and the Jewish Federation, was coordinated with and represented by members of the FBI, OC Sheriff’s Department, the local branch of Homeland Security’s Anti-Terrorism organization, and the Irvine Police Department. Locally, these groups have combined their efforts and are working together focusing on the prevention of terroristic acts against all of us. To put words into actions, our Security Committee met with a group of security experts at TBT who toured our property and will provide us with a “Vulnerability Assessment” report along with recommendations to improve our security. Lauren Simon and Cindy Jacobson are requesting a second such assessment by the Critical Infrastructure Protection Team (a local arm of Homeland Security) who will independently also provide recommendations to improve the security of our campus and activities. In addition, we will be filing a request for grant money from Homeland Security to pay for any actions that might
be offered in these recommendations to include improving the lighting in our parking lots, enhancing the real-time video monitoring of our property, and other security enhancement actions to our facility that might be deemed appropriate or essential by these security professionals. Finally, TBT will send representatives to attend future meetings of the Orange County Intelligence Assessment Center (another Homeland Security sponsored group) to remain apprised of and actively participate in actions being taken locally by the member organizations and federal and local authorities to keep us all as safe as possible. Save the date …

OC iEngage – Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Temple Beth Tikvah Proudly Presents an Exciting Learning Opportunity with the Shalom Hartman Institute
Join us as we explore the Jewish values that unite us. We’ll develop new ways of thinking and talking to each other about Israel by confronting one of the issues that most divides us.
Through the study of Jewish narratives about Israel and the complex meanings of peace, land, justice, self-preservation, compromise and
Jewish exceptionalism in Jewish tradition, participants will develop a greater understanding of the ideals that shape their political views and those of others. Together, participants will create a context for respectful Israel engagement across our differences.
