TOPIC: "The Seven Deadly Selling Sins and What to do About Them"

SPEAKER: George Disylvestro, "Problem Solver" American Colloid Co. Skokie, Illinois

George Disylvestro has served the industry for 44 years and has spoken to every AFS chapter in the U.S. and Canada. He has been active in both AFS and DIS, and is currently serving on several committees. George was awarded the 1971 AFS Sand Division "Scientific Merit Award for Enthusiastic Assistance to the Industry in Rationalizing Foundry Sand Technology" and the AFS Silver Anniversary Award in 1976 and 1984. He is currently Manager of Technical Services for American Colloid Co.

In presenting and describing each of the sell-ing sins, George will offer practical suggestions on what a rnetalcaster should do to stay in business. He will be reviewing the very important need for metalcasters to develop an atmosphere throughout the plant of successful selling support. Building a climate for profitable casting sales must project quality, value and customer service to become part of your customer's team and product. This image, if projected consciously and supported by management, will cement your present sales and develop new prospects.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

I would like to thank all who attended our October meeting. We had a good turnout and a super day at Buck Iron Co. The meal at Olde Hickory Tnn was first class!

Our November meeting will be very special because it is Scholar-ship Night. We of the Phila. Chapter can be proud of our organization. The Scholarship Committee (Tom Hart-man, Rick Boyd, Al Umble, Jim Young, Steve Baxter, and E.X. Enderlein) has selected the following 6 individuals for a $1,000 scholarship each.

Mark E. Chapman (H. Mandel Scholar-ship) - Drexel

James H. Lafferty - Drexel Christopher Schade - Drexel James R. Whetstone, Jr. - Drexel Adele R. Trump - Penn State Lois A. Miller - Bucknell

The Committee has allotted an additional $1,000 for the educational purposes of the Chapter.

The Committee felt that tuition reductions for members of the Chapter attending locally-held CMI courses was appropriate. This is a qood meeting to bring the boss and show him what AFS is all about!

I know it is early in the year, but if you would like to serve as a director for next year or if you know of someone who would, please let us know.

Ray Gilli, of the Membership Committee, with the help of John Bissell have us on the move. We have 5 new members plus a corporate mem-bership this month. Keep up the good work!

Make your reservations for the November meeting with Jennifer now so we can have a correct count for a quality meal.

Hope to see you there!

POSITION/EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE

The Chapter's Board of Directors has recently passed actions which now make it possible for company members of the Chapter to place "Position Available" listings in the Chapter newsletter. The following parameters were established for such listings.

"Position Available" listing's can be made only by Chapter company mem-bers (or higher membership levels) on a month-to-month basis. Each listing must carry the name and address of the company Member (no box number referrals) with the body of the list-ing - limited to 25 words or less. A one-month listing will require a $25 donation to the Chapter. Listings of individuals seeking a position will not be accepted.

"Equipment Available" listings will also be accepted with the same parameters and restrictions as with Position Available listings. All listings should be sent to the Chapter office and must be accompani-ed by payment. The deadline for sub-mission is one calendar month before the scheduled Chapter meeting for which a newsletter will be prepared.

AFS MEMBERSHIP

Enclosed with this newsletter is an Individual Membership application and a Corporate Membership applica-tion. The strength of any organiza-tion and the future of the industry it serves rests with its membership. The Directors of the Chapter firmly believe that membership in AFS pro-vides benefits which are advantageous to individuals and corporations of all metalcasters and supplies to the industry.

Please take a few moments to con-sider the advantages of membership. Consider who in your organization can benefit from an individual membership and consider if an upgrading of your corporate membership can provide advantages to yourself and the industry as a group.

CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIPS

The Chapter is proud to announce that six $1,000 scholarships will be awarded at the November meeting. The recipients are as follows:

James H. Lafferty - Coleman Award - Drexel Univ.

Christopher Schade - Enderlein Award - Drexel Univ.

Mark E. Chapman - Mandel Award - Drexel Univ.

Lois A. Miller - Bucknell Univ.

Adele R. Trump - Penn State Univ.

James R. Whetstone, Jr. - Drexel Univ.

Congratulations to these students!

It is also noteworthy that the Scholarship Committee has iiade the sum of $1,000 available to the Chapter for support of local CMI courses. This action was taken to address the need for education of those individuals who are employed by a Phila. Chapter company membec. More information on this action will be forthcoming.

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT HOUR

As everyone is aware the Chapter has been providing a cash bar [or members before our regular meetings to promote fellowshio among .'neibers. What everyone may not be aware of, however, is that most establishments require a minimum amount of sales at a cash bar to avoid oay;nent for bartender fees. Cooperation is needed from Chapter members to assure that when a cash bar is provided it is patronized in favor a regular bar at the meeting location in order to assure that the minimum 2urChaS levels are achieved and that unnecessary charges to the Chapter are avoided.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

HISTORY

One of the first foundries in America in Saugus, Mass. produced Cast Iron Pots and here is a little chatter about those early Cast Iron Pots.

Our first thoughts are of strangers in Africa and South America may have become a not-so-tasty stew for us, but for the native tribes, a really tasty treat.

In the New World, the Cast Iron Pots were introduced by Columbus. In the 1300's Cast Iron Pots were considered part of the families' wealth. By the middle of the 18th Century, Ironware was highly regarded in Europe and exported to all parts of the world. At that time in America most cooking was done in the fireplace or in a "lean to" near the cabin. Dutch traders traveling from cabin to cabin were selling Cast Iron Pots to settlers and Indians, thus the name Dutch Oven.

Cast iron distributes heat evenly - the Dutch oven had a flat iron lid upon which hot coals are placed to ensure even cooking. It has a sturdy bail for hanging over the fire and three legs to keep the pot level when set in the hot coals. There are many designs or shapes of Dutch ovens and legend has it that Paul Revere perfected the design. Many early foundries made hollow ware Dutch ovens and frying pans. Some of the later models were porcelain on the inside; even today they are produced in this fashion.

Early explorers, mountain men, military expeditions, and early settlers depended on two things, the Kentucky rifle to supply game, and the Dutch over to turn game into a meal.

More about Dutch ovens later.

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT HOUR

As everyone is aware the Chapter has been providing a cash bar for members before our regular meetings to promote fellowship among members. What everyone may not realize, however, is that most establishments require a minimum amount of sales at a cash bar to avoid payment for bartender fees. Cooperation is needed from Chapter members to assure that when a cash bar is provided it is patronized in favor of a regular bar at the meeting location in order to assure that the minimum purchase levels are achieved and that unnecessary charges to the Chapter are avoided.

Thankyou for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

Chairman's Message

My thanks to all who were present at our January meeting. We had 56 people in attendance. It was a pleasure to see all of our past chairmen and their wives.

The Society is saddened by the loss of Emmanuel X. Enderlein, Sr. who died suddenly on December 31, 1985. He was President and Chairman of the Board of the H.G. Enderlein Co. Manny was active for 56 years in the foundries his father established in Philadelphia and south Jersey. The company will continue to operate under Manny Enderlein, Jr. I have worked for H.G. Enderlein since 1962 and this is a personal loss for me. We will all miss Manny at our meet-ings. Don't forget to contact Jack Wolfe, our Chairman of the Nominating Committee. We need good men!

The membership as of December 31 5 1985 looks good. Larry C. Craff, Glendon H. Harris, William E. Hockenhury, Richard L. Jensen, John C. Martineau, Charles H. Mease, John Remlinger, Randy Welker - We wish you a hearty WELCOME! We hope you will take an active part in the Chapter.

Don't forget our March 13, 1986 meeting . . . It will be a roundtable on melting. Make your reservations early. See you on February 13th.

MAKE YOUR PLANS NOW

With Spring "just around the corner," it is not too early to make your plans for the 80th AFS Casting Congress. Attendance is a good way to improve profits, cut waste and make complex business decisions. This year's Conference will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 11-15, 1986. DO PLAN TO ATTEND!

SAD NOTE

It is with deep sorrow that we note the sudden passing "sf Mr. Emmanuel X. Enderlein on December 31, 1985. As stated in the Chairman's Message, "Manny" was President and owner of the H. G. Enderlein Company in Philadelphia. He represented one of the finest examples of foundrymen in the industry of today, through his participation in local and national AFS activities.

He was also active in the Pennsylvania Foundrymen's Association and the Iron Casting Society.

FOUNDRY SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL SEMINAR

This seminar is designed to bring foundrymen up to date on the latest think-ing within the DER relative to the disposal of foundry wastes. In addition, we will bring you up to date on coming requirements for liquid wastes, such as process and surface water runoff.

Larry Lunsk is the person responsible for the operation of landfills and the issuance of permits for solid waste disposal in southeastern Pennsylvania. Larry will explain to us why the DER must do the things it does. We have asked Larry to give us some of the history of the development of present regulations so we can see how we've gotten to the present state of affairs. Hopefully, he will give us some thoughts from his perspective on ways in which our legislature could help to reduce the present crisis.

Jonathan Stone is the Technical Director of Cast America, Inc. (C-E Cast). Jonathan will give us his views from that of a chemical binder supplier. It is primarily the organic compounds which come from our chemical binders which give the PER concerns over our spent sand. Phenol and formaldehyde are examples. Hopefully, our chemical binder suppliers are working in their labs to Find ways to reduce the environmental impact of our binder systems.

George Boyd will give us an overview of the waste disposal problem by describing the interrelationships between foundrymen, the community, the DER and the legislature to put the problem into its proper perspective as a social problem which must have community involvement and also that of our representatLves.

Dr. Ray Regan, professor at Penn State and co-director of the Hazardous Waste Institute, will help us to see this pressing problem in a clear perspective by describing some of the simple realities of waste disposal and its impact 011 our environment. He will also, because of his work with the PER, give us insight into the workings of that agency. We have asked him to devote a substantial amount of time to field our questions on this important subject.

As most of you know, foundrymen in southeastern Pennsylvania are involved with a project to open a regional processing facility to reclaim our process sand for re-use. The Process Recovery Corporation has been formed and Joe Manzella, its President, will be our dinner speaker. Joe will bring us up to date on the progress of the PRC and discuss the tentative site which has been found.

We look forward to seeing many of you on the afternoon of April 17th.

AFS BOOKS

One of the real assets of the American Foundrymen's Society is the technical books and other publica-tions which they produce. The scope of the subject matter covers ALL pri-mary areas of ALL metalcasters. A real asset of membership in the AFS is that these books can be obtained at substantial discounts to members. To better familiarize the Phila. Chapter members with the most common-ly sought publications, the Chapter has purchased a "complete library" of books from AFS for display at meet-ings.

This library is not a lending library but is intended to give members a chance to review the latest publications in their field and to see for themselves the advantages of ownership. The Chapter will accept direct orders for any books in the display and for any AFS publication. The motive on the Chapter's part is that we will receive a refund to the Chapter treasury on all books sold in this manner.

It is planned that the library will be on display at the May 14th meeting with the Lehigh Foundrymen. Come and take a look for yourself.

The Metalcasting Industry cannot thrive in a technical vacuum
